Virigin your iPhone using this step 1-11:

    http://www.winandmac.com/mobile/ipho...via-downgrade/

Than, you can proceed to step 12 for 1.1.1 unlock.

Or you can go for the 1.1.2 unlock using this guide:

i got it out of the recovery mode by starting apptapp
although apptap got it out of the recovery mode, it told me that it failed to copy to iphone.. now its on the activation screen..

i just tried restoring again (after kicking back to recovery mode) but i still get the couldnt restore error..

Well, I used independence to jailbreak 1.0.2. That worked. But only if I clicked 'activate'. If I clicked jailbreak, it went into recovery mode and never came back...

Just start independence after getting the error and it should take it back to normal operation. I'm not sure wether I really understand your problem...
The apptapp installer didn't work for me by the way, at least not in 1.0.2.

from what I read, restoring to 1.1.1 u get error 1015, and restoring to 1.0.2 you get error 1013, which is fine, if you have a windows based machine, get Ibrickr, and just click the first option once its connected, worked for me for both restoring to 1.1.1 and to 1.0.2

The 1013 error is because your modem firmware is not 1.02, probably 1.1.1
    or 1.1.2
