Is there a way to change this back to the default setting? It worked fine before.
I could set it to the number of his provider's service center, but if he tries using another provider, it won't work, so I'd rather put it back the way it was.
Thanks in advance for the help!!
No this change is dependent on the SIM.
All you need to do is re-write is proper message center back to this card!
If he puts another card in, the SMS center should be correct, its only the VM number that appears to be un-populated on some cards for some reason!

THANK YOU!
I got him to put the sim card into a normal phone; one that allows you to set the SMS service center easily; and corrected it there. Put it back in the iPhone and it works

I would love a solution for this - it sounds like healydave was very close with getting credit notifications instead of the vm messages (hey, at least u know there IS a vm that way!). So keep the ideas coming, there must be a way to get the sms to come thru

If you do find yourself in the middle of a modification in minicom and the AT command set is giving you an error after you have entered a known good command, all you need to do is enter:
AT+CPIN="xxxx"
Where xxxx is your SIM's PIN number.
This will tell the baseband that you are authorised to make changes.
Voila, you should now be able to submit the AT commands without an error being returned :-)
enjoy!
P.S.
To configure your voicemail button to work, simply follow up with the command:
AT+CSVM=1,"xxxx"
Where xxxx is your networks voicemial access number.

Why create a thread (or even link to it) when there's a page on the wiki that has step by step instructions?

Well this thread was created before the WiKi and resulted in the creation of the IRC channel:
#iphone-config
on server
irc.os86.hu
It was on this channel that the pin problem was discovered which resulted in the original WiKi page being created on the dev pages.
Since then several new threads have been created by people duplicating the information trying to take credit for it all.
