chmod a-x does NOT prevent upgrade
I had done chmod a-x /usr/libexec/software_update
Nevertheless the phone was bricked during upgrade by an inexperienced user.
(I did not check whether permissions were really set correctly but as I didn*t get an error I assumed they were set correctly)
So beware when handing a modded iPhone to your girlfriends and grannies ...

iTunes 7.3 considers 1.0.2 the newest iPhone firmware -- downgrade iTunes and they'll never have the opportunity to make the mistake.

So any 7.3.x is what you are saying???
So if I put 7.3.2 on a friends windozey pc then it should not allow an upgrade to 1.1.1 then?

Put any version on your buddies PC and disable automatic update checks in Edit->Preferences->General Tab... Last check box.

I'm using iTunes 7.3.0.5, which can be downloaded from here -- http://www.pqdvd.net/iphone-unlock-toolkit.html
If I hit the "Check for update" button, it states that 1.0.2 is the newest version available. If I connect a virgin 1.0/1.0.1 phone, it asks me to update to 1.0.2. If I connect a virgin 1.1.1 phone, it asks me to upgrade to iTunes 7.4.
iTunes 7.3.0.5 is largely idiot-proof.

If the user hits "Restore," he/she will still inadvertently update to 1.1.1. Downgrade iTunes for 100% protection.

So 7.3.05 can it still grab the 1.1.1 during a restore then?

I wonder whether removing the directory /usr/libexec/software_update would prevent upgrades ?
Perhaps someone can try to remove the directory on an already bricked but half re-virginized 1.02. phone and do again an upgrade to 1.1.1. ?
The answer to that question is actually quite important since inexperienced users love to press plenty of itunes buttons especially if the keyword "new" is mentioned ...

er..... I value my phone two much...
How about you experiment and post the results if you used the ipsf to unlock before you go to 1.1.1
