7U almost sounds definatly like a phone with new FW.

I opened an iPhone with 7R***** and it has 04.01.13_G do we know if this is new or old firmware? OP said possibly. And what happens if I try to Jailbreak? I'd like to at least be able to return this.

ok info for you all. Today I purchase 2 iphones 1 from NYC 5th ave, 1 from SoHo.

5th Ave has 7u**** serial so I assume its the new firmware.

SoHo serial is 7R***** figured I was ok. Opened it and did field test for firmwave. It said 04.01.13_G and based on another forum, this is the new firmware. I will lose 10% by returning this but better than bricking it.

    This blows.

I read somewhere that in the serial number, the 4th and 5th numbers indicate the week the iPhone was produced. eg. if the 4th and 5th numbers are 3 and 7 respectively, then the production week is 37. (week of Sept 10, 2007) Is this info true? Is this a legitimate way of determining if the iPhone is older and therefore on the old firmware?

I really need to know... Going to buy one tomorrow (Saturday) morning!

    Thanks, guys!

I have a couple of 7U serials that came with 1.01 firmware on them.

SWEET!!!!! I opened all 4 that I got TODAY in NYC from 5th ave store. Although the serials all start with 7u7**** they all had 1.0.2 firmware!!!! Whew. So the 2 I got in SoHo even though they were 7R at least 1 is the new firmware. Tried to determine a way from the serial to find your firmware, but no indicators or variations in anything from what I can see.

So it looks as though you MAY be able to get a 1.0.2 at the 5th Ave store. I'd stay away from SoHo. Good luck all
