I don't write much on this forum, but I do read it everyday since the very beginning (I'm from the 1.0.2 unlock wagon).
Here are my 2cents for "reorganizing" the forum:

1- Stop replying to questions that can be answered with the search button. It is true that a lot of people posts questions that have been answered thousands of times, but having 20 posts of people that say: "Use the search button, idiot" it's not helping either. Let the post die by simply ignore it. This way the first page of the forum (which I believe is the most viewed) it's to full of posts like this. In my experience this happens in a lot of forums, I don't see why it can't happen here too.

2- Why not create a section with just guides and tutorials? The unlocking forum has too many stickies in my opinion. Having a forums with just guides and tutorials would help noobs and more expert users alike. Newbies would posts their questions on the thread related to the guide they used and seniors would post solutions to their problems. This way hopefully a person has to read one or two threads in order to find the info they wanted.

3- Dividing HW Unlock from SW is a good idea

4- What do you think about a new forum design? I'm sure that there are many talented web designers in here.

Those are just ideas, I hope somebody agrees with me

    Cheers!

I think it should be divided into UNLOCKING and JAILBREAKING

    Then further into 1.1.1 1.1.2 n 1.1.3

Also I think there should be a separate section where users can post the link to a thread which is completely unnecessary and no point of it being there or which has died out

That way moderators can hit the link and decide for themselves to delete/lock it. Itll just help to make it clean.

I think there should also be a restriction for new users to create threads. For example the system will let them create new threads only after 5 posts. That way they will HAVE to search for their problems since most of them dont even bother reading stickies

Hope it helps BTW great job !!

The noob who posted his question won't let it go down to reach the 2nd page in the threads list.

He will bump it many times until he gets someone to answer.

The only way for me to prevent bumps flooding is to remove the threads and send a PM with the explanation/reason why it has been removed (most of the time > title not in conformity and description of the problem in 6 words >WTF ? My iPhone is stuck HELP !!!!!!)

So IMHO, the only way to prevent noobs to write/bump/flood threads without reading stickies and searching in sections is to put a timer before they can post (2 days). So they will spend time to search and read until they can post.

I like the idea of removing threads and sending a PM with explanation, but I'm not so sure a timer would be so good. It would just be frustrating and irritating in case someone with a new/unique problem shows up. It's still possible to search the forum with google, so newbies can find the information/answers they need without registering if they only use their brains a little bit.

I'm not very patient with newbies who create unnecessary threads - I say force newcomers to read a newbie guide or something by linking them directly to it at some point during the registration process. If they don't get it after that, there's no reason to be nice anymore - just remove their threads.

Agreed, splitting up that forum into more subsections is a good start. but as stated before, that still will not deter NEW users from posting whenever anything goes wrong. It still will not help them to use the search function, thus still cluttering the forum.

I still strongly support my idea I pitched to 41 a month or so ago:

Just a suggestion to help clean up the forums. For a while now, there has been too much "junk" out there, making it difficult and fustrating to find relevant information.

One of the other forums I frequent has a 30/30 rule. New members must be registered for at least 30 days, and have a minimum of 30 posts before they can start their own topics. They also can only post once every 15 minutes as well.

Maybe something not that extreme, but something similar to it would help promote people to actually search, and contribute making this forum a better place for all.

Like I said there, maybe not THAT extreme, but something similar would really help to clean up the redundant questions out there that new users ask daily.

The unlock section can be splitted into 3 different sections:

    - Software Unlock
    - Hardware Unlock
    - Jailbreak

The Native Software can change to SDK and will contain two sub-sections:

    - Official
    - Homebrew

The "Turbo-, Supersim and Simcloning Solution" section can change to "*SIM Hack solution" and can be divided to several sub-sections:

    - TurboSIM
    - StealthSIM
    - NextSIM
    - ...

As for the Guides/Tutorials, we already have the Genius Bar section

What do you guys think ?
    agree

    the only question is
if simcloning is divided like you said, will it become to be a free support to people who sell that *SIM ?

As every new user should use the search function first I think it would be great to have a NO POST rule the first 3 days after registration.

The problem is not a lot of people who aske repeated question, the problem is that information is very hard to find and to understand and then to apply. And then if a user finds the information it is very difficult to understand for a new comer, what is a BL , seckpack ...

The second problem on unlcoking is that there is a lot of information to do the same thing, I remember when i first tried to to unlock my iphone I had to read many many guides (over 10 guides), and each one was telling me something different than the other. so I got messed up, and I expect that the first thing that any user would do, is ask questions.

The solution is a WIKI! this should resolve mosts problems, because information is more organized in a wiki, and then links can be used for very difficult terms like (BL, seckpack, firmware), everybody should write something on the wiki, so knowledge will be well written, and the the information can be improved. This is a think that can not be done by a forum, in a forum you can only add information, or ask question and expect someone to reply( or to tell you use the search!!!), and then when you do it a lot (ask/reply, add news) the result is a big mess!!!
