Default [Canada] "Rogers Wireless" versus "ROGERS", Voicemail, SIM's

    Hi Everyone,

Just wanted to share a few experiences and am wondering if the Rogers Canada users can chime in.

iPhone running 1.1.1. I was getting "Voicemail" SMS messages from Rogers as well as WhoCalled SMS messages. Having no problems. This is strange, since most threads suggest that 1.1.1 broke Rogers voicemail notifications, but I wasn't going to complain.

I updated to 1.1.2 and the phone was still working but strangely, I stopped getting voicemail notifications, despite the fact that 1.1.2 was supposed to fix Flash/Alpha SMS messages. I also stopped getting WhoCalled SMS messages.

So, I called Rogers and had them reset my line. They did, and I started getting those "WhoCalled" SMS messages again, but still, no voicemail messages.

Tried restoring my phone, reverting the baseband, reupdating and reunlocking 1.1.2 and still, no voicemail notifications.

So, on a hunch, I pulled out a new, shrink-wrapped Rogers SIM card that I have lying around (from another unrelated phone). This is a brand new, latest SIM card. So new it doesn't say HSDPA on it anymore (Rogers briefly issued SIM cards that said HSDPA to tout their new high speed network but then quickly changed them as their was confusion over weather you actually needed an 'HSDPA' card to get 'HSDPA' - you don't, by the way).

I called Rogers, claimed my SIM was flaky and had them change my account to the new 4000 series SIM (my old one was a 3030 series, branded Rogers AT&T from back in the day).

    Now, here's what's new:

My iPhone used to scroll "Rogers Wireless", then finally settle on "Rog...", using my older 3030 SIM. As I said, voicemail SMS and voicemail notification (red dot on voice mail button) wouldn't work, even in 1.1.2 or 1.1.1 with the SMS fix (which is just the phone app from 1.1.2).

Now, with the new 4000 series SIM, my phone scrolls "ROGERS" then settles on "ROG...". Also, my voicemail SMS, whocalled and voicemail notification all work perfectly again.

So, my question to all Rogers users is, what version of iPhone are you running, what version of SIM do you have and what are your experiences? You can tell your SIM version by looking at the series of numbers on the SIM itself:

    XXXX
    XXXX
    3000/3010/3020/3030/3040/4000 <-- SIM Version. 4000 is newest.
    XXXX
    XXXX

    Do you get notifications?

Do you ever have dropped calls (I don't) or do you ever lose signal (I don't, at least, no ore than my old RAZR or Sammy a706)?

What does your phone scroll? "Rogers Wireless" or "ROGERS"?

    Iphone: 1.1.2
    Rogers SIM: 3030

I get all SMS, Voicemail SMS, and Voicemail Badge ( red dot )

I notice sometimes the signal strength is low in areas that my MOTO always had strong signal.

    Scrolling Carrier: Rogers Wireless

Anyone on 3030 or 3040 (32K) SIM series should definitely switch to at the 4000 (64K) series.

I've had a 4000 since the day they became available in the Samsung D807 boxes and have never had a problem with VM notification, Network SMS on 1.0.2, 1.1.1, 1.1.2.

Never really understood why people were having problems but this could totally be the reason.

Btw to get a new SIM for free, call up Rogers and just bitch them out for no reason and they'll try to trouble shoot, say nothing works and then they'll tell you it's your SIM (duh) and then go to the store to buy it, get them to fax in the receipt and you'll get a credit for it on your next bill.

If you're lucky and live in the East then you can probably get one for free in-store at a corporate store.

OR, even better the guy at the store is nice and just gives you one.

Luckily I had a 4000 series sitting around so I had them switch my account to it (no charge).

That having been said, I'm happy with the 64k SIM because my VM and such works again, but it's strange that it nows says "ROGERS" and not "Rogers Wireless".

Can anyone shed light on why this is?

Also, is there a practical value to upgrading to the 4000 series if you're not having trouble? Extra RAM, sure... but anything else?

all of new cards say ROGERS instead of the older ones that say Rogers Wireless... i can confirm that on 4 different iphones and multiple other phones... they all say different things in different phones... its somehow programmed in the card i guess.. because i also have a fido city plan from back in the day when it was fully unlimited calls..and on 1 nokia ophone it says fido.ca and rogers underneath and in a samsung it just says Rogers.. and in a razr it says FIDO

Well.. to me it's a very stange. I am not able to get VM notification on my 1.0.2 with my current SIM, but putting my friend's SIM will work fine.

Then, later i updated to 1.1.1 and my VM notification works fine after that with my current SIM, but lately i just noticed that VM notification no longer working. So, I decided to update to 1.1.2.

And now, with 1.1.2 and the same SIM, still not having VM notification.

i have no idea how VM works on rogers. it was working with 1.1.1 for a period then didn't work again even updated to 1.1.2

I will try the new 4000 sim and see.

I signed up with Rogers when I got my iPhone. So I always had a 4000. Eveything works great, and I did notice that it says ROGERS on mine and on my buddy's is says Rogers Wireless, but his VM notifications work just fine, and his is a 3040 SIM.

Let me get this straight.....you get "WhoCalled SMS messages"??
You mean on your SMS screen a message is sent that says the name of the person that called ....and that you missed it?

Mine never did that....If I'm in sleep mode and I press the home/sleep button and I come out of sleep mode, it will tell me in the middle of the screen I missed a call and who it was....Is this maybe what you're thinking of?

Yes, it's called 'WhoCalled'. It's a Rogers service, but you have to subscribe to it. I actually get it because I have the $12 Call Essentials bundle, which is like WhoCalled, Name Display, Enhanced Voicemail, Visual Call Waitiing, etc. I'm pretty sure you can add it to any plan for like $1.00/month or something though.

Basically, if someone calls when the phone is off (or wasn't reachable due to signal problems), when you turn the phone on (or find signal again), you get a text message saying that such and such people called and when, even if they don't leave a message on voicemail.

Definitely not the Apple styled "missed call" dialog on the sleep screen, which is of course a function of the OS, not a network service.
