Can a New iPhone with 1.1.1 be downgraded to 1.02?
I'm a scared owner of an iPhone 8gb, purchased on the 26th of Oct early (XMAS present from my wife, who got it through a colleague visiting the US)
I'm too scared to hook it to Itunes and dying to find out whether it is 1.1.1 or still 1.02.
Is there a wa to find out?
Can it be downgraded and unlocked?

It can be downgraded but not unlocked at the moment.

you dont need to look into itunes to know if its 1.1.1 or 1.02
acording to this post

Now that new phones are on their way you may want to check the firmware before trying to restore to 1.02 . As the restore is the first step of most unlock procedures you may want to start with this step.
You can check what firmware is preinstalled by going to the emergency call, entering *3001#12345#* then pressing "Call". Under Versions you will find what revision firmware is on the phone out of the box.
03.12.06_G Is firmware 1.0.0
03.14.08_G Is firmware 1.0.1 and 1.02
04.01.13_G Is 1.1.1
you can downgrade the firmware but not the baseband (the gsm modem chip) so you cant unlock the iphone as a phone... but you can use it as an expensive ipod and browse the web using safari and wi-fi...
right now there is no unlock solution yet for 1.1.1 firmware
