Yes that is an excellent question. I've been baffled by the existence of this option since it first appeared in ZiPhone. Why would an end user want to erase?

I found myself that 'bug' a few minutes ago.. and I already recompiled ziphone.
YOU were the only one to NOTICE that

If you broke it trying a Geohot IPSF-like unlock or other unlock (like I did) this is a useful option as it will erase it and iTunes will be forced to load a new one in when you restore.

Oh so thats when my iphone was unlocked with ziphone and it had latest baseband and firmware, then i did a restore via itunes but it was still unlocked?

Don't do it! DONT ERASE YOUR BASEBAND WITH ZIPHONE. I DID AND NOW ITUNES CANNOT RESTORE TO ANY VERSION. WELCOME MY NEW IBRICK:
