Default Brand New iPhone with No Wifi !

    Hi,

I just purchased a brand new iPhone (1.1.1) and unbelievably it has No-Wifi without me even doing anything yet.

    Heres what I tried:
*#301# to get into the settings menu

Wifi is completely greyed out. I cannnot enable it.

Tried everything: reset, restore no difference.

I finally decided to try and downgrade to activate. I used Independance and downgraded to 1.0.2

This worked fine and I was able to activate; however, I still don't have WIFI!!!!

    What should I do ?

    Thanks for any help!

PS. I tried posting this once b4 but i don't think it went through. hope i didn't double post

A destroyed baseband out of the box? That's unusual.

    Try this
    1) Upgrade to 1.1.1 From iTunes
    2) Enter DFU mode with iNdependence (possibly with 1.3beta2, I have a gut feeling that it works better)
    3) Follow the instructions to downgrade to 1.0.2 and pay attention during the restore progress in iTunes, if a dialog box reads "Upgrading firmware" (not software) you have probably solved your problem and when it's done you'll find yourself with a working 1.0.2 with the old baseband.

I'm not sure if it works but it's surely worth a try.

    Thanks for your reply...

Don't mean to sound dumb but isn't this what I just tried ? (I did use DFU mode to downgrade)

Heh, you are probably right; I missed the "using independence" bit and assumed you used the alt-restore + AppTapp method.

You could try that again just to be sure, but I'm starting to believe I must be something like the only one who managed to get the baseband back that way

Anyway you could try revirginizing your baseband instead, but the tricky part would be putting the terminal application and virginizer pack in without SSH.
I think that if you do a "prepare for 1.1.1 upgrade in iNdependence" it will set up a symlink from wich you can get to the root of your jailbroken 1.0.2 iPhone and put the terminal app and virginizer inside /Applications and /usr/bin using iPhuc, iPhonedisk or some other software that gives you access to the Media "partition" of the iPhone.

If you can yes, I think it's able to put files into the root of jailbroken iPhones without SSH (something I'd love to see in iNdependence by the way).

    Cool

I had the same problem. Take it to the apple store and have them replace it.

I went to the genius bar and showed them.

I told them I just got this phone and i wanted to make sure everything works so i ran the following commands
    #*307# and so on.

They might complain that you can not do that, just tell them, you did not install anything and you can buy a brand new phone right now and perform that short cut command. You want to exchange the phone and you do not want to activate it.

No matter what they say, it's your right to exchange it if you are within your 14 days. Worse come to shove get the manager and they will exchange it for you.

I had the same problem. I was going to unlock the phone and noticed that the wifi and bluetooth were all zero.

I tried 3 restores back to my 1.1.1.

I just did this today. so i know this works.

My story is the same, but when back to 1.0.2 the phone is frozen. I took it to apple they said they did a feild test and wifi works but it is disabled till the phone is actually activated.
I told them i cant activate cause then i try i get a weird error that says phones needs to be repaired. they switched them out for free
