bought iphone that was already unlocked, now i want to update firmware, but..
Hi all,
I just bought my iPhone in Nicaragua. The phone was already unlocked and works just fine. What I know is that the firmware version is 1.1.1 (I don't know if it was updated or originally 1.1.1). I also don't know what software was used to unlock it. My questions are: How do you I find out what software was used (if this is crucial info). How can I update to version 1.1.2 and in the future to newer firmware without "permanently damaging" my iphone?
Thanks for your help & time!

Hi
I would wait till next week at least, it will be a new firmware and will give you time to get ready.
As for what you ask you should follow http://iphone.unlock.no to do what you want.
I would think it's safer to virginize you iphone before attempting any upgrade but as i never done such thing i'm not going to tell you to do it
I know that the old unlockers would mess your baseband (that is why would be safer to virginize) as you don't know what was used, but i don't know either I have to use virginize if i had to restore my 1.1.2 (1.0.2 OOB) or if it is safe to virginize even when you don't need it.

thanks for your reply. nevertheless, that link you provided is to unlock the iphone. mine is already unlocked, i want to know how (if possible) to upgrade the firmware without "bricking" or "permanently damaging it".

You have to install oktoprep before updating to 1.1.2 and then update and finish it by running jailbreak 1.1.2.

xianli!!
it looks like you know what you're talking about. do you have any links (tutorials, downloads)? your help is much appreciated!

You must jump directly to this tutorial's step #4.
http://www.hackint0sh.org/forum/showthread.php?t=18284
Just ignore this as it is for people who downgraded from 1.1.2 to 1.1.1 (Tutorial's step #1 to #3)
this time you will not get an error message like the last time when u downgraded to 1.1.1

ok it looks painless, but i must ask a couple of more questions since i dont want to screw up.
1. does it matter which software was used to unlock my phone? (b/c i dont know)
2. at the end it says i will have an "activated and jailbroken 1.1.2 phone". But, will my previous unlock remain unaltered? or will I have to then unlock it again? I ask because it says: "NOW ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS GET A TURBOSIM AND START USING YOUR PHONE".
thanks XianLi!!

OK I read that some unlocking software before anysim 1.1 had flaws and thus upgrading to 1.1.2 could brick my phone if I it was unlocked with anything else besides anysim 1.1. Is there any way to find out if my phone was unlocked with anysim 1.1.? Also, I found out that my phone is from week 37, which means it is 1.02 OTB, jailbroken, updated to 1.1 and unlocked who knows how...maybe this info can help those of you who know about this stuff more than I do.
thanks, danke, gracias, merci!

Man, if you dont know what unlocking software were used, add this source to the installer: http://i.unlock.no and ran an application called The Virginizer. This will repair and downgrade your baseband and now you are ready to upgrade your iPhone without risks. Its easy.

OK, so just correct me if im wrong, steps would be:
1. Virginize the "easy" way you mention
2. By pass activation + jailbreak
3. update from 1.02 to 1.1.. with itunes?
4. unlock with anysim 1.1
5. oktoprep
6. update to 1.1.2 with itunes
7. jailbreak again.
step 3 is what im not sure of..
thanks.
