    Thumbs up

Why should be Apple only selling 3G iPhones in the USA? That's something annoying. In fact, one of the reasons Vodafone gave it up was because althought it's in almost all of the countries of the European Union, iPhone hasn't got 3G and Vodafone has inverted lots of euro millions in developing their 3G network.
In fact, in Spain, where I live 3G from Vodafone is really much better and very much developed than the principal carrier in Spain (Movistar, the same propietaries than O2 in the UK).
As a result of this about 85-90% of people in Spain are able to access the Vodafone 3G network, that works in all the territory also with HSDPA and HSUPA, while Movistar only works with HSDPA and HSUPA in cities where the population is over 100000 people.
The most probable thing anyway is that Movistar brings the iPhone to Spain (it has already done throught O2 in the UK), but I don't think European carriers are very happy they miss lots of euros in developing better networks and iPhone only works with the "old" ones.

Everyone should care. Don't you have 3G in your country?

I know that in the US, the latecomers to the GSM game, 3G is incipient, and this is why Apple/ATT opted to go with GPRS/EDGE only (and this is one of the reasons for the limited success of the iPhone in Europe, were in some parts 3G data is better than GPRS/EDGE).

I can seen that 3G not available in some countries, specially because of cost restrictions. I know that there are places where even plain GPRS is not available. But this is no reason for Apple not releasing a 3G version. Soon that will be the only type of iPhone available: 3G that is backwards compatible with GPRS.

Any, it's already coming, and will be available at the middle of the year (one year after the first one?). For us is just a matter of waiting.

Ok, I agree that price (both for phones and for service) may be an issue. But in serveral place EDGE/GPRS and even plain cell service is still very expensive. It's just a matter of volume: the bigger the consumer base, the cheaper it gets over time.

Hell, I do! And so does Jerome! We've had great 3G covering in the UK for a coupla years now (T-Mobile). For me to go back to GPRS is a major setback, tempered only by the genuine superiority of the iPhone's other aspects!

I can't wait for the 3G version. I doubt it will ever come, because the networks the phone is available for now still won't have 3G coverage by the middle of this year.

Odds are that Apple will indeed get a more secure BL out at one point or another. Realize that part of their business model is getting a cut from AT&T, and thus once a phone is unlocked they actually lose revenues. Also keep in mind that they probably have an agreement with at&t(and any other carrier) stating that they can't open the iphone to other carrier for a while (probably 2-3 years) which means that they most likely will have to patch these holes...

So the question is when, not if they will gt a new BL out there...

There is one thing that bothers me though... If we can patch the BL by software, odds are that so can they... I'd be more worried about them bundling a new BL as part of any future updates, and that it would not be so easily removed, in which case we'd be in a whole mess of trouble...

Agree... now the thing is... I already switch my 8GB for a 16GB one; how old this will become in my hands before I change for a 3G one? :p
