    If we're trying to speculate how long it would take to break a future bootloader using the past as our guide (which I believe was what was in question in this thread). It is really irrelevant how long we sat waiting for it to happen, the amount of hours it took to actually work through is what matters most.

    I think with Georges' (as well as the rest of the community) apparant renewed vigor and much more in depth understanding of all of the iPhone software processes involved we are probably not looking at 3 months to break a future bootloader. Of course only time will tell.. this D A M N crystal ball is NOT woooorking! Bah!

    Really Apple should love George and send him nice gifts.. because I'm sure there was a HUGE turn around in the post xmas slumping sales of the iPhone this last week! Apple should give Geo hugs and kisses for valenties day! (and then secretly rue him after the fact for all of the lost revenues from thier AT&T agreement)

    Bear in mind that apple have never attempted to upgrade the bootloader in a firmware update, so it probably would not affect existing owners. If in fact they did attempt it, it's possible it would open up new vectors of attack for hacking the thing

    Good point. I think they would likely just ship new phones with new bootloaders. Eventually that still would effect most of us, even those of us with working phones at the moment as eventually we're all going to want to upgrade to the 3G, GSP enabled, 1 terabyte iphone thats coming out this summer. Haha.

    That is the point! Unlocked iPhones sales account for more than 25% and it's increasing. Specially when it becomes easy to unlock (1.1.1 jailbreakme, the *SIMs from China and currently ZiPhone). There should be close to 1 million iPhones now, and almost all of these phones would not be sold otherwise. Since there is no shortage of iPhones, the actual revenue stream from AT&T and friends is not being hurt.

    Apple ought to be loving this iPhone cat and mouse game. They are making money out of it and it gives so much hype in the news (they look, people unlock).

    The baseband processor on the iPhone is an infineon PMB8876 S-Gold 2 multimedia engine. This handles all the "radio" communications (Bluetooth, WiFi and phone+GPRS/EDGE). Infineon is the one that creates the baseband program and it's bootloader. So far the design is for a fixed baseband bootloader and a flashable baseband firmware.

    Upgrading the bootloader on existing phones is too risky for Apple/Infineon: there will certainly be bricked phones.

    And yes, if they make new bootloaders upgradable, then they will be making it even simpler to downgrade or create a custom BL.

    Now, the tricky part is that in the upcomming 3G model, the baseband will have to change and ...... the game will start again.

    A new bootloader soon? hummm... with a new baseband in the horizon?

    @Donkey:

    Why should only people from the US be interested in the 3G iPhones?

    Germany (T-Mobile) has a very high coverage rate of the 3G (UMTS) network.

    I think it would sell over here as well. But much more interesting would be HSDPA!!

    looking forwartd to everythnig new from apple.
