Question AnySIM, iUnlock etc. all just 'hang/freeze' when attempting to run them on iPhone

A strange thing is happening to my friend's iPhone. He just got it from the States and it shipped with 1.0.2. We did all the usual stuff - used the latest version of iNdependence to Activate and Jailbreak and install SSH. This all went without a hitch.

We then tried unlocking the phone, first by using AnySIM. We got the AnySIM.app onto the iPhone but when we tap on it to run, it loads up the nice GUI but the 'Slide to Unlock' can't actually be 'slided' - it doesn't sparkle like the Slide to Unlock does on the home screen, and when you attempt to slide the arrow across it just doesn't respond. It's as if the program is freezing the second it loads up. After about 15 seconds or so, we're just taken back to the springboard/menu.

This same thing happens when trying to use iUnlock - we tap on the App on the springboard and again it just shows a white screen with no interaction possible, then crashes to the main menu about 15 seconds later.

Is this an issue that is commonly experienced and easily fixed?

One thing I must mention is that when you turn on my friend's iPhone, it says 'SIM Locked' and we have to type in a 6-digit PIN to get the SIM unlocked (but not the good kind of unlocked - just the kind that lets the phone interface with it). He tells me now though that he has turned off the SIM PIN using his old Motorola cellphone, but the freezing is still happening.

Anyone got any suggestions? We've tried the whole Restore thing of course, but to no avail. Any help would be much appreciated.

Am I right in thinking iBrickr works without wi-fi? ie. connecting the iPhone direct via usb.
