    I've got a business account so used 08700 746 464, went through to 'other queries', got a customer support bod on the phone and asked about the registration process and voicemail.

    However the support guy explicitly confirmed (and I asked so I wouldn't get them into shit) that you can just call up support and ask them to add 'next generation voicemail' to your account. It's free and it does the job without the additional email address / data requirement (not sure if that comes free, you may want to check whether your vodafone.net email address checking comes under GPRS data charges).

    They *will* know about it, especially if you mention Icon Alert for voicemail. It's a current large project rollout.

    Just don't mention you've got an iPhone, and don't let them transfer you to the Handset department, just ask them to add the new functionality to your account.

    Once they've done that, calling 121 will no longer work until you reboot the phone... after rebooting, the voicemail girl talks faster and you get the Icon Alert option, which you can choose.... and then it all works as expected.

    Absolutely marvellous.

    I'm not a Vodafone fanboy either, I switched from Orange (which, ironically, already had Icon Alert support...) because of the data rates and my Treo 680 with ChatterMail was eating data like no tomorrow, even over GPRS. But Voda have had decent customer support, and their network is actually reliable unlike Orange's.

    Incidentally I then got transferred to another customer support bod who then proceeded to have a 30 minute chat about hacking / reverse engineering stuff... he hacked consoles and had Linux on Xbox etc. and was in awe of the iPhone working properly on Vodafone So word is getting out. Rumour has it that Vodafone rejected the iPhone due to Jobs' contract terms and their insistence on EDGE, whereas Voda have invested a lot in 3G / HSDPA... and interestingly, they knew about the exclusive SIM-lock plan and reckoned UK customers would fiercely oppose it, and the device may bomb.... This is interesting stuff....

    Great catch that - thank you. I used 191 from the handset to call. Now, they have cancelled the vodafone mail and put the next gen voicemail on my account but from midnight tonight, so at the moment no 121 event after restarting the phone, hopefully all will be well in the morning.

    Rgds,

    R.

    You can add other lines to the UK section in the ABPhoneFormats file such as:

    <string>0207 ### ####</string>

    This will then match numbers starting with 0207 and display them as you want them. Below is a copy of the US section in my ABPhoneFormats file.

    <key>us</key>
    <array>
    <string>0## ### ####</string>
    <string>00 $</string>
    <string>02## ### ####</string>
    <string>01709 ######</string>
    <string>0114 ### ####</string>
    <string>01302 ######</string>
    <string>01## ### ####</string>
    <string>+44 #### ######</string>
    <string>07### ######</string>
    </array>

    I have contacts all over and the numbers are not displaying correctly but I decided to lengthen the section and it works a treat.

    I am going to try and use the information from this page:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telepho...General_format

    to try and come up with a solution once and for all.

    Regards
    Andrew

    PS I have never posted before so I hope this has displayed correctly
