I ahd the same problem until I signed up for Vodafone mail service as it gives you 'enhanced' mailbox functionality. I had to have the ring to deliver selected to be notified of voicemail. Now I have signed up to Vodafone mail free text alert with icon is working ie I get the red dot symbol above the voicemail button and new voicemail popup.

Having seen this yesterday I dialled 121, got voicemail and had the option to change the message notification settings and, voila - red dot voicemail notification !!

Try dialling 121. In the main voicemail menu, select mailbox settings (Option 4), then message notifications (Option 3) then select "Icon Alert" (option 4 I think).

    I dialled the following number ;

    *5005*86*121#

After pressing call, it all worked as expected.

Thanks to everyone who's contributed to this forum as it made the whole unlocking process pretty easy. I'm now just stumbling across other niggles which I'm fixing along the way.

For instance, I noticed that my SMS and email messages had the wrong time. Couldn't find the right button then noticed in General Settings -- Date and Time, you can switch "Set Automatically" to off then pick the correct time zone.
This worked for me on Vodafone UK. Thanks!

Bollocks. Option 4 for me is 'voice alert' which is that damn callback. And it calls back and rings for around 40 rings, then stops, then rings again. Bloody useless.

    No 'icon alert' for me.

    Rgds,

Can you give me some more information? I run my own mail servers on several domains using Mac OS X Server on my own hardware, so I don't need another mail service.

Do I have to pay Vodafone for additional email to get this option then? Where do I 'sign up for Vodafone email' and what exactly **is** Vodafone email? I.e. will it affect my current, working, email platform (i.e. iPhone IMAP over SSL to my own servers) ??

I'd much appreciate it if you could make this more clear.

The vodafone mail service can be accessed and signed up for at http://www.vodafone.net like creation of a hotmail account but it is linked for notification with your voicemail as well. It will not change any of your existing email/

Yes you will get another email address but you don't have to use it! What it will do is recreate the voicemail for your phone number *and* give the option of notification of waiting messages ( fax, email and voicemail ) by icon+SMS - this will work with the iPhone and display messages waiting correctly.

    Many thanks.

I'm currently on the phone to my Voda business advisor since the registration service isn't working for my account (small business, a few phones and a 3G usb modem). He has informed me that Icon Alert *should* be available to everyone as it's part of the rollout... they are doing batches of phones though.

Currently on hold waiting for a definitive answer - if not then I'll attempt the Vodafone mail if I can get past the registration screen....

    Thumbs up

Right. Straight from the horse's mouth (UK Vodafone Network Support) - all you need is 'next generation voicemail service' added to your account. It's free and available to everyone. No mail upgrade etc. required - I've had the 'next-gen voicemail' added just now and I now get voicemail notifications in the 'red dot' on the voicemail icon, and warnings on the main screen when voicemail is left.

Once you've got the next-gen voicemail, call 121 and use the method above to set to 'Icon Alert'.

Excellent Only one thing left now, and that's named SMS (i.e. balances from my bank). Everything else works.

PS. I have confirmed with the Vodafone guy that it's OK to disseminate this i.e. phone up and ask for 'next gen voicemail'. Don't get put through to the Handsets department, they don't like it if you tell them you're running an unsupported handset. Customer services or Network support will do it for you.

well, i took the easy route and quickly registered for the free vodafone.net service. This adds the enhanced features to your voicemail mailbox and also allows you to access voicemail messages through the web as well. I've tested it and finally [as promised!] I have the alert icon on my mobile when messages are left!

one note: when you register, it will send you a text message with a security code. Because of the problem the iPhone has receiving service messages/mailbox notifications, you need to put your sim card into your old phone in order to receive it . You then enter this security code into the web page registration form.

the vodafone.net service is actually really good. When someone leaves a voice message on your phone you receive an alert icon on the phone and you can listen to the message as normall using 121/242. But, as well as this, the voice message appears as an email with an attachment in your vodafone.net account.
This means you can pickup your voice messages as emails via vodafone.net's webmail, through an outlook client or [as I have done] by configuring my regular webmail account to fetch vodafone.net emails. So anytime someone leaves a voicemail for me, I get notified on my phone, and I get an email with the voice message as an attachment delivered to my regular email account. Pretty cool stuff!

    p.s. I'm no vodafone fanboy!
