first of all cnbc isnt the most accurate source for news. especially tech news. second of all they can go ahead and brick the modded iphones. especially the unlocked ones. they'lle just have to give you a new one. it's your legal right to have an unlocked phone and even though apple isnt obligated to go outta their way to make sure their fw updates dont ruin your phone, they CAN be held accountable for it if it does. "hey dude, i just upgraded my phone it went dead on me. it's still under warranty so give me a new one......" especially since it isnt gonna be YOUR mods to YOUR phone that bricked it, but THEIR software. sorry dude. but i call B.S. apple would loose too much by bricking any phone. heck if anything, they might be taking so long in releasing the new update BECAUSE theyre trying to make sure that all it does is relock your phone and not brick it......

restore your iphone, before they release the software update. aka today. then wait for somebody to confirm it does not brick previously-unlocked then restored iphones

Here is the whole damn thing:Apple said after U.S. markets closed on Monday that programs available on the Internet to unlock its iPhone and enable it to work with service providers other than AT&T's Cingular network can cause irreparable damage to the device.
The maker of the Mac computer, the iPod digital music player and iTunes online store said that, once an Apple-supplied software update is installed on the iPhone, it "will likely result in the modified iPhone becoming permanently inoperable."
The Cupertino, Calif.-based company also said an iPhone that does not work any more due to the installation the unlocking software is not covered under the device's warranty.
Apple
[AAPL 148.28 4.13 (+2.87%) ] plans to release the next iPhone software update later this week, the company said in a statement. Currently, in the United States, AT&T
[T 42.27 -0.26 (-0.61%) ] is the only authorized service provider for the iPhone, which went on sale at the end of June.
