Default Activating an unlocked French Iphone out of state

    OK, Simple question:

Someone purchases an iphone in Orange France Store for 649 euro, and the a sim card with 100 euro credit. Then they travel home without activating to other european state.

Once in the comfort of there own home, they ring the international number, and give the number of the phone! Orange takes the 100 credit from the card, and unlocks it. How is this achieved?

Does this call need to be made from the iphone with the card installed (I doubt its not activated)?

There have been reports of people who tried this and failed, because the Orange Customer Service, which they have to call to get it unlocked, tells them they need a French address to send unlocking codes..

    Odd, I know!

OK so if you have some one with a French address! But they are not going to send unlocking codes via the s-mail system. They would send them via e-mail or via a txt to the phone number!

Very true, but I've read reports of people on Belgian forums that they asked for a French address, others say they didn't.

It's very odd indeed. Maybe they are just checking to see if you live outside France? Who knows... It's all very confusing.

Except that they don't send any code to any address, either physical or electronic. The unlock apparently occurs when you connect to iTunes and iTunes checks the IMEI of your phone to the magic list kept at Apple. At the most Apple might require the e-mail address associated with your iTunes account, but you can log into your country's iTunes (and thus your own iTunes account) from any place on the globe (where there's Internet access of course).

I thought that the process was to report the IMEI to apple upon purchase...

Someone purchases an iphone in Orange France Store for 649 euro, and the a sim card with 100 euro credit. Then they travel home without activating to other european state.

If that's how it is done, then one can just get a US iphone and a 100 euro sim card and perform the unlock....

From the Apple forums, apparently iTunes checks the address tied to your credit card on file with your iTunes account. Remember this is what people are assuming, and it's not official word from Apple so don't take it as fact.

This may be how Apple made the unlock essentially for people living in France. I don't know off the top of my head how legal it is, or if using a prepaid card credit would be a work around. I'll do my best when I have time investigating it. Also those of you who always assume everything is legal or vice versa -- please do not start guessing and making up your min based on common sense. Sometimes laws defy common sense. And unless you're stating cases, codes, or other real legal authority don't create mis-information.

It gets more and more confusing.

Christmas is coming, so a friend of mine from France gets me an iPhone with unlock and gifts it to me. I get it in another member state, hook it up to my iTunes and log into my account from my member state, surely it can't be such that Apple would refuse the unlock then! After all the item is paid for and unlocked legally in France, it just is attached to a alternative account.

    EDIT:

Actually I was thinking a little more about this. The unlock is done by Orange, who notify Apple of the IMEI number after they have taken the 100 euro credit from the sim. The IMEI is then flagged as an unlocked iphone on apples server. This would suggest to me that it is irrelevant which itunes account the activation is performed through.
