Activating 1.1.1 without jailbreaking
I'm having battery issues so I want to exchange my phone at the apple store. However, it would seem a little suspicious if I returned an unactivated phone (after running onesim and restoring). Is there any way to activate the phone without jailbreaking the phone?
All the methods so far for 1.1.1 jailbreaks the phone as well. Is there something akin to DVD Jon's activation server for itunes 7.3.0 and firmware 1.0.2? Never tried using the activation server on 1.1.1, anyone knows if it will work?

Wouldn't they be suspicious if your activated phone isn't activated with AT&T? From what I've read so far, they're not going to entertain you if you do not have an AT&T account but I may be wrong.

You can jailbreak it, activate and put it in jail again. Just change the first line in fstab file:
/dev/disk0s1 / hfs rw 0 1
to
/dev/disk0s1 / hfs ro 0 1
and put it back using putjailbreak.

Actually, I'm still within my 2 week return period so I think they will do the exchange but still, it would be too suspicious if it was unactivated.

say, i bought it, open it, but the plan is too expensive for 2 years so I change my mind.

well, I just want to exchange it because they have a 10% restocking fee if the packaging is open on returns and it would be too weird to talk about my usage when it's unactivated.

Yes, that would put the main partition in read only mode but I think jailbreaking modifies services too and I think the geniuses would be able to detect that. Has no one tried taking back a factory restored phone? Running oneSim and restoring on itunes should set everything back but it's the activated vs. unactivated issue i'm worried about since I just want an exchange.

return it - pay the 10%. go to ATT store, get another one. You don't have to exchange if you dont want to.

restore the phone so its not activated, bring it to the store and keep it in the box, if they ask to see it or turn it on and ask about the activation screen, say you restored the phone so your personal info was removed.
maybe that works?
