How is hacking the iphone accomplished?

I mean, the forum is full of warnings to brick the phone with actions you cannot undo, and virginizing is not such a safe option either? How can you run so many attempts of activating, jailbreaking, unlocking etc. and not bricking your phones with this?

Can someone give a little insight, what the principle approach is?
