3rd party apps on new iphone

Can I get 3rd party apps on a new iphone. I am an AT&T customer and have activated the iphone?

What do I need to do?

What dont I need to do(ibrick ,jailbreak...) since I have already activated the phone thru AT&T?

Should I wait till 1.1.3 has a good working solution...I really dont want to mess the phone up?

My wife has an older Iphone thru AT&T that I was able jailbreak and get 3rd party apps. I would really like som of those apps.

Current iphone version 1.1.3 firmware 4.03.13_G
