3.0.1 fixes a SMS flaw that could be used to crash or hack phones via deliberately corrupted SMS. You can restore and then use redsn0w to jailbreak. The only change is the SMS fix.

3.1 offers support for all the new iTunes 9 features, there have been reports of battery life problems with 3.1. I am running 3.1 on my 2G phone and my 3GS Both batteries seem to be lasting about the same time as before. I seem to be getting slightly more reliable wifi connections with 3.1 also.

Right now the only way to 3.1 is via a custom firmware created with pwnagetool (which is mac only). There are people posting 3.1 firmware online. This is not allowed on this forum.

With iTunes, now your phone is hacktivated via redsn0w, it is fine to sync your phone. The sync you mentioned iTunes was attempting to do will make a backup of the user files on your iPhone. You can add music and use iTunes normally. The only difference is if you restore to 3.0 or another firmware you should always use a program like redsn0w to jailbreak. This also hacktivates your phone which means that iTunes does not try and activate it (which fails of course)

Yeah, so it unlocked last night, and this morning i got a text from my carrier telling me that i have incurred $75 in data usage.

Is there a way to turn off the data/internet once you've upgraded to 3.0

I'm afraid to turn my phone on now

    HELP!

I should have mentioned this in the earlier posts. This is however well documented in other threads on this and other forums.

The cause is a problem with push notifications being improperly configured on 2G iPhones on hacktivated phones.

The simplest way to fix this is to disable push notifications.

    1. Download a free app that includes push notifications. (AP News, Textfree Lite, Bargain Bin).
    2. Run the app once on the phone and when asked, let it turn on push notifications.
    3. Go into Settings and there will be a new entry for Notifications. Turn Notifications off
    4. Now you can safely delete the app you don't want it.

This will stop the data traffic and dramatically improve your battery life.

Also, how can i put music on this phone without re-locking it. as soon as i open itunes it wants to synch and i know that'll end in a lockup. Is there anyway around this, cause not that my zune is dead i need some music for the subway!!

    Thanks again!!!
    Good job upgrading your phone.
Your iphone 2G is now "forever" unlocked.
One thing I forgot to mention is bootneuter. If you don't have that icon on your phone, you are ok. If you do, remove it. You don't want to accidentally run it. If you run it, just hit home to quit. Just don't hit flash .

As far as the data goes, you can do as describe by Olethros.
Or you can make sure the APN field in your Cellular data network is blank.
That will prevent the phone using the data network.

Dtube is correct, as you clearly have a very expensive data plan, I would suggest turning push off, setting mail to manual or fetch and clearing the APN field. Clearing the APN field prevents all processes from using cellular data. However some automatic/background process will still try and check and then fail, this can have a big impact on how long your iPhone lasts between battery charges.
