I was not thinking of replicating whatever algorithms the Apple activation server will do, but instead, to replicate the 'state' the officially unlocked iphone will be in, after the unlock/activation by apple.

Still it sounds really complicated though...

So does that mean that the Italy-sold iphones will be upgrade-safe and will never get re-locked? WOW!

I believe what happens could be that the phone re-locks after every firmware upgrade and is re-unlocked every time the phone is activated. I could trust Apple to make unlocking as difficult as possible to satisfy their customers, the carriers.

Hey I'm actually gonna be in italy next month... If I pick one up from there can I just bring it back to Canada and use it with my rogers sim card?
