[1.1.x OTB US] Legally unlocking in France ?
Hello,
I hope I won't be asking a stupid question... But I am wondering..
Has anyone tried unlocking their non-French iPhone legally in France?
As the procedure is simple: charge the prepaid card, call Orange's customer service, get a letter, activate through iTunes.
I was wondering if I could wander into France and buy a 100 euro prepaid card and call the customer service. Has anyone ever tried this? Could it work?
I want to try this but I don't want to be stuck with a 100 euro prepaid card...
For the record, I live in Belgium and have a US iPhone week 52 FW 1.1.2.

Doubt it... AFAIK, it starts with French Apple store taking your IMEI and comminicating it to Apple, which it then matches with what your iTunes sends their way, and unlocks it somehow. Won't work with a US phone...

So I guess no one has ever tried it, then?

the french phones only get "unlocked" to french providers so only french simcards will function in it. So its not a total unlock

Apparently, they work perfectly now with 1.1.3
I frequently visit a Belgian Mac forum and a couple of people there bought one of these legally "unlocked" phones in France. They could activate the phones no problem, only with 1.1.2, they had to jailbreak them and install iWorld for them to work like they should.
Now, I've read that someone tried 1.1.3 and they don't have to be jailbroken anymore to work properly.

And what makes you say that you can't?

You can't because like I said when you pay extra to have an unlocked phone, the store sends your IMEI to Apple. How are you going to have French Apple store send your IMEI if you show up with your US phone?? WHO DO YOU PAY extra in your scenario?

Incorrect Buddy
I have a French 1.1.2OTB IPhone
Purchased a 75 euro card in which you receive a 25 euro bonus thus 100 euros
Communicated with Orange France Customer Services(722)
They took 100 euros and 8 days later when restored and activated USING A DIFFERENT SIM CARD I received a Congratulations your Iphone is unlocked
Only problem is that if you activate it with an T Mobile UK simcard all you can use is a TMobile or other MVNO (Virgin/Fresh/Mobile World) SIM
If you need to use an alternative SIM you need to restore the Iphone and start again
To date no issues with phone crashing
BTW updated to 1.1.3
