just went thru the same thing
gf had a 1.0.2 iUnlocked 2G 4gb iphone from 9/2007 on T-Mobile..
the other day she dropped it, got the repair needed msg
i suspected she damaged the hardware from the drop
then she had an IT guy at work upgrade to 1.1.4 without revirginizing first...
from here on the phone was just fked
tried everything downgrading to 1.1.1 back to 1.0.2 and hacking right from 1.1.4 but nothing could access the baseband anymore which further confirmed the hardware damage
then the battery ran down and wouldn't charge anymore so only turned on while plugged into the wall socket and powered off the second you disconnected from the socket
3 seconds in the microwave..
this actually jumped the phone, i was able to power on via usb with PC! but PC would not read the phone... phone would power on throw a bunch of errors and reboot and do it again...
another 3 seconds...
this prompted restore screen to come up when i plugged it back in (pc still would not read it) and the screen was not fked all the pixels were bright
being the dumbass i am, 4 mroe seconds.. ding!
out comes the phone, light burn marks on the rubber on the back... but even worse the lcd burned on the top right corner about 1 cm in diameter..
convinced I just lost any chance of Apple warrantying this phone now.. I put it in front of the A/C overnight to blow away the burnt smell
Called up AppleCare and told them apple stores were overloaded w/ 3G craze right now so they overnighted a warranty box to me which i sent back to them last friday. And remember, warranty is not based on activation. I told them I was IT director of my company and we give out Iphones to all employees so we bought a lot last year, some of which are still sitting on the shelf unopened, unactivated.
checking the repair status, they received it yesterday morning, diagnosed it during the day and finally...
replaced it and shipped out the replacement yesterday! should be receiving it today before 3pm!
last note: this phone also had tons of damage from other drops.. a huge dent on the back.. chips all over... scratches on the front chrome bezel..
I have tons of respect for apple and their prompt response. My gf on the other hand.... =/
