All in all, what are the most commonly used methods of unlocking an OTB 1.1.4? Is it even possible, or only possible with the upgraded software via iTunes. Don't get angry, I just got back into the scene and I am momentarily confused.

I haven't heard anything against it working. The two most popular methods for unlocking 1.1.4 appear to be Independence for Mac and ZiPhone for Windows. Both can activate, jailbreak and unlock. ZiPhone will work on Mac and has added option of downgrading the bootloader IF required.
