Any hint

I can't even seem to get the iPhone in DFU mode. When I press and hold both the sleep/wake button and the home button for 10 seconds, the screen turns black, the iPhone appears to be off, but I don't get the iTunes popup about being in recovery mode.
These AT&T refurbs are old. Mine is firmware version 1.0.1, with baseband 3.14.08_G!

download ziphone2.4. inside its folder there is a icon for DFU.bat click on that when your iphone docking to computer, it will put your iphone into DFU. then u can use ziphone or iplus to activate and unlock. Both are ok since your iphone is old version.

Hi, I had the same problem and followed this guide. Worked.
Step 1. Turn off your iPhone.
Step 2. Hold down the power and home button.
Step 3. When you see the Apple logo, release the power button but continue holding the home button down.
Step 4. Open iTunes and wait for it to tell you that its in restore mode.

Thanks so much. A web search revealed the same thing. The instructions on "Hack that Phone" were wrong -- you have to continue holding the home button down.
The activation/unlocking went flawlessly. However, although syncing with iTunes goes just fine, there are some weird error messages in MacOS X Console:

Any idea what could be causing this?
