I have a friend with a 2G iPhone still on 1.1.4 firmware, and he wants me to upgrade it for him without losing his jailbreak and unlock.

I dont know what method it was used before to be jailbroken or if it matters, but it has an app on it called "installer"

I'm mainly wondering if its possible to upgrade it to 3.0 now that 3.1 is out or if iTunes forces the newest update.

I have used redsn0w to jailbreak my own iPhone which has 3.0, so if I can get his iphone to that point then I think i'll be fine but I wasn't sure if it was possible to do.

I do not have a mac so I cant use the newest PwnageTool, but he does need to keep his unlock which as far as I know wont be a problem if its just upgraded to 3.0.

Any help would be appreciated.

If I DL the iPhone1,1_3.0_7A341_Restore file and shift click in iTunes can I update it to 3.0 and then just use redsn0w or would that not work now that 3.1.2 is out?

The redsn0w method will work on an update to 3.0. If you want to update to 3.1.2, you will have to do an alternate method.

1.1.4 to 3.0 on iphone 2g is entirely possible and it will be OK.

- update your iphone 2g running 1.1.4 directly to firmware 3.0 downloaded from apple.
- use redsnow to jailbreak + unlock it (set phone autolock=never before you do this) and follow instruction. During the unlock process, do not interrupt it just let it run and finish.
- Once done, you will have a jailbroken & unlocked iphone2g

If you want to go to 3.1/3.1.2, you must create custom firmware using pwnagetool 3.1.4. Once you have the custom firmware, simply shift-click restore and select custom firmware to update. No need to DFU or recovery mode for this step.

Regarding snowbreeze mentioned in post#2 . It is vapor ware. DO NOT TRUST any other programs that is not released by the DEV TEAM or Geohot or Chronic-Dev

So you're saying all I need to do to upgrade to 3.0 is plug the phone into itunes, and let it upgrade automatically? It won't lose the unlock?

You won't lose the unlock, it is permanant from 1.1.4 onwards.

You need to restore (avoid upgrade with jailbroken iphones) once with apple official ipsw >1.1.4 because you need to update baseband.

Then because you require hacktivation you need to jailbreak.

Best approach is as dtube has outlined earlier.

OK I just want to clarify since I am not the one that initially unlocked the iPhone, and I'm doing it for a friend who knows nothing about computers.

The phone is a US iPhone unlocked with what I believe is ziphone (due to presence of 'installer' app) and being used in Norway.

The phone is OS version 1.1.4 4A102
Model: MB384LL
(Not sure if this is relevant: Boss prefs v1.73, Installer v3.11, Nullriver software and rip dev, iPhone 16GB -- Basically just copied any info I could find)

I will download and install latest iTunes on her computer, back up the phone, download iPhone firmware 3.0 direct from Apple (I'm sure I can google for the link), then use shift click to install a custom firmware from within iTunes.

Then just use redsn0w to reunlock? I won't have any issues with (don't know what I'm talking about here really...) baseband updates, firmware locking, broken wifi, or SIM card locking to the US carrier?

ZiPhone can have caused some problems, but if you have wifi and unlock working at 1.1.4 you are fine and can simply do as you described in your post upgrade wise.

You need to upgrade iTunes to at least 8.2 (the latest 9.0.2 works fine also) to restore 3.0 OS. Make sure to restart after you have upgraded iTunes.

When running bootneuter (the unlock for 2G iPhones built into redsn0w and pwnagetool.) always let it finish even if it seems to be taking a long time. Do not force restart the iPhone during this stage, it is possible to permanantly break the phone/Bluetooth/wifi if you restart before this finishes by itself. Don't play with the settings in boot neuter either, just let it run automatically/per defaults.

Aside from that warning, dont be too worried. It is very hard to break a 2g iPhone permanantly.

More care needs to be taken if upgrading from 1.0.2 or 1.1.1 era as some unlocks from that period damaged things in a way that needs to be reversed before the permanant unlock can be applied. Your phone is luckily not in that situation

We are in Oslo, Norway. Thank you very much for the reply, it's 11AM here now and I'm going to try this in a couple of hours, I should have some results by the end of the day. I am not positive that wifi works right now on her phone, but I will find out before.

Do I need to do anything with the auto unlock off before I do this? Or is that just after I update to 3.o and before I use bootneuter/redsn0w? I should be doing this with a Windows Vista PC.

Also wanted to ask that once I get it updated to 3.0, is it worth upgrading/trying to upgrade to 3.1.2? The main reason for wanting to upgrade to 3.0 in the first place is that she's having some issues with dropped called, and some buggy features with the phone. Also I know that there are various security exploits in previous software versions, so I just want to make sure the phone will be secure and functional.
