I'm using a 1.1.3 OTB 16GB iPhone downgraded to BL 3.9 - Google Maps "Find me" functionality works great.

My old 8GB 1.02 upgraded to 1.1.3 (also BL 3.9) also has Google Maps "Find me" functionality.

Both phones were unlocked/activated/jailbroken (and the 16GB 1.1.3 OTB downgraded to BL 3.9) using ZiPhone 2.2.

Edit: If I had chosen to leave my 16GB 1.1.3 OTB with BL 4.6, then I believe I would have been required to use baseband firmware 4.02 (from 1.1.2) instead of 4.03 (from 1.1.3). In this case, the Google Maps "Find me" feature wouldn't work, and I'd have been forced to use the third-party "locateme" or "Navizon" apps (which, in my opinion, have 'issues' (as stated in my last post)). So I chose to downgrade to BL 3.9 (and use baseband 4.03 (from 1.1.3)) - allowing me to use Google Maps "Find me".

    No I'm not saying that.
    • 3.9BL CAN use 1.1.3FW and 4.03 baseband whilst unlocked. Find me function works with no problems.
    • 4.6BL can only use 1.1.3FW with 4.02 baseband when unlocked. Find me needs additional apps such as locateme or navizon.

I guess it comes down to this: we're all taking risks by messing with things in a non-Apple-approved way. And as long as apps like ZiPhone give us a choice (when it comes to *unreversable* mods like BB downgrade), then that's fine. The lack of a choice is a problem.

As far as I can tell, locateme does use cell tower triangulation. Googlemaps uses wifi location first (iphone and ipod touch) and falls back to GPRS/EDGE triangulation when there is no wifi signal on an iphone.

I think its fair if anyone that wants to downgrade their bootloader to go ahead and do it. I am just against the ziphone utility doing it without explicit commands to. This shortcut -Z switch should not be messing with the bootloader IMO.

Previously i unlocked my 1.1.2 OTB with gunlock and everything works fine in 1.1.3jb.
Then I did something wrong and stuck with the apple logo.
So I did a 1.1.2 restore and jb/activate with ./ziphone –j –a but everything went strangely after jb.
So I did a 1.1.3 restore and jb/activate(I just wanted this two option as I wanted to gunlock myself) with ./ziphone –Z N
Then ziphone jb, activated, downgraded bootloader, and IPSF unlocked my phone.
I chose only 2 options but ziphone gave me 2 extra options which are RISKY (I really don’t want to take and I want 4.6_GEOMOD) and NOT software reversible (as I know).

    So is it a problem?
At least now I know ziphone is not a honest software(if it is not a BUG).

To be clear, from my testing: locateme uses cell tower triangulation (although, I actually only ever see it find "1" cell tower - does that mean it's not actually triangulating?).

BUT, in order for locateme to find the lat/lon of your cell tower(s) (to display on Google maps), it seems that it needs to do a "database lookup" over WiFi (and, it seems incapable of doing this database lookup over EDGE).

So, if you don't have a WiFi connection (example: you're on the highway) and have EDGE, locateme will find 1 cell tower, attempt the database lookup, then fail with a database lookup error (so, it's not able to plot your current location on Google Maps).

Sorry to sidetrack this thead with a description of what I consider to be a 'bug' in locateme - but since this thread is (in part) talking about whether/not you need the features of Google Maps built-in "Find me" feature, I wanted people to understand that 'locateme' does NOT get you the same functionality (in NON-WiFi situations). At least that is what I have found - the several times I've tried locateme (latest version - "0.5").

I have 0.5 as well and it has worked for me, the database fetching over gprs/edge. I don't know why it hasn't worked for you. But I think you only need to run it once per reboot, then after its been loaded once, googlemap's built in locattion feature will work. I haven't any hard evidence, but from what I can tell they use different methods and give slightly different results from the same place.

So then, How do we jailbreak, unlock, and activate without jeapardizing the bootloader 4.6. In other words, is there an earlier version of Ziphone that won't downgrade the BL? Thanks.

How do i tell what Boot Loader version I have?

I ran Mac GUI on a 112 phone that was previously Jailbroken and unlocked using a Stealthsim. Restored phone to 113 via itunes then ran ZiPhone. Works fine but locate me just spins and does nothing.

    Modem version is 04.02.13_G

    Use ziphone -a -j -u

    Don't use -Z at all.

    Enter DFU mode manually:
Have the phone connected to your computer, and on. Turn it of by holding BOTH the power and home keys, (about 7s) then the screen goes black. When it does release the power button but keep holding the home button. If itunes is open, it will detect the iphone is in DFU mode and force you to restore. Use the option key in mac (shift in windows) when u click the restore button and choose the 1.1.3 firmware you have downloaded somewhere.

Once the fone is restored, choose to set it up as a new phone in itunes, DON'T use an old backup.

That should give you a fresh 1.1.3 with out any of the older files etc. However if you are on 3.9BL I don't think this will change it. But it should still work fine.
