Not sure what you meant by could not update, but for sure a restore won't work.
What happened when you tried to update to 1.1.2?
Heck, I don't normally recommend this but you could always try using Nate's jb to go from 1.1.1 to 1.1.3. There will be issues but they should all be solvable.

READ CAREFULLY:
The MOST common mistake people make is the difference between restore mode and DFU.
In order to restore back to 1.1.1 power down holding BOTH buttons.
When the screen goes black, release the power button but keep holding the home (Round) button until you hear your pc ding twice (New hardware connected sound).
The screen should look like its powered off. Then and only then, use iTunes to restore to 1.1.1.
iTunes will kick out an error code and reboot to the screen with the cable picture. Open iBrickr and boot. Done!
i have done this 3 times and worked every time.

Oh that one is easy: just use iBrickr .91 to get it out of recovery mode. Then run the 1.1.2 jailbreak.

Look here:
http://www.hackint0sh.org/forum/showthread.php?t=27000
you can kick the iphone out of recovery mode using conceited software jailbreak program. Start it (windows.bat if you are ysing a pc or jailbreak.jar on a Mac) then press boot from recovery. Then you will see the emergency call screen again. Now you restart the jailbreak program, mark SSH and press jailbreak. It will work.
This is the link to the jailbreak program i used:
