Default [1.1.3 (OTB 1.0.2)] - Google Maps Locate Feature only works on wifi?

Hoping someone can confirm this is how it's supposed to work.

The locate feature in Google Maps will only work for me if I have a WIFI connection.
    If no wifi, never works.

I used ziphone, and have the 3.9BL/4.0.3.XXBB

Same issues with "Locate Me" app available in installer. An older version of the program didn't require wifi, but the newer versions all require a wifi connection in order to grab your info/location. This was on 1.1.1 Anysim

you need connection because your phone collects the id's of nearby GSM antennas or the MAC address of nearby wifi routers and then use an INTERNET server to ask where these antennas/routers are...

Prolly google uses a number of cars moving around cities with wireless and GPS and it records the location of every rooter in the big cities.... Then it stores this location into their database.... And your phone queries this database (e.g. where is mac address xx:xx:xx:xx:xx)

So you need to communicate with Google's server...

I don't think Google maps 'locate' feature requires WiFi - just an EDGE connection is enough. I know that I used the feature the other day while driving (far away from any WiFi that my iPhone knows about) - and it worked.

The 'Locate Me' application *does* seem to require WiFi. If I turn WiFi OFF, it fails to work (gets a database lookup error) - even though I have EDGE.

EDIT: I just turned WiFi OFF on my 1.1.3 iPhone - the Google locate feature still works (over EDGE)

It doesnt use EDGE, my understanding of the Job's keynote was it found the nearest mobile phone poles in the area and thats hwo it got your location. Why would it be a new feature in 1.1.3, it could have just been implemented in 1.1.2 or 1.1.1 if it used EDGE or Wifi.

And how are you supposed to see your location on the map without internet? Google maps can't show any maps without an active internet connection (that means Wi-Fi or EDGE, of course).

I also think the location feature is based on the nearby antennas, but you need an internet connection to actually show your location on the map. So, either way, you need at least GPRS. That means the location feature won't work if you're not connected to the internet.

    Apple
    sucks.
    Microsoft rules.

    TurboSIM-like methods? No way.

    - Unlocked Week 47 1.1.3 iPhone, baseband 04.04.05_G.
    - Bought in Minneapolis, MN;
    - Currently on TIM carrier.

I'm not here to find help. I'm here to help others and give back what I've learned from Hackint0sh.
