ok well it is already activated. i tried just checking jailbreak and running it. no installer. same result with activate and jailbreak checked. should i restore it and then run ziphone? should i activate it first then use ziphone to jailbreak or just activate and jailbreak with ziphone. then i can still use my att service right?

What does the activation part of the script actually do? In what scenario would you not need it?

Thanks all, I have a sealed 16GB iPhone staring me in the face. I've been reading as much as possible to educate myself before attempting an unlock and jailbreak.

are you using att? if not, just make sure you're on 1.1.3 and use ziphone

Yes, but an old (inexpensive$39.95) AT&T plan that has a corporate discount (20%). I have a new 16GB iPhone so that's 1.1.3 OTB. In preparation, I added a MediaNet unlimited data plan for an additional $15 to my old existing phone. I'll be using my old phone's AT&T Sim. I figured for now I'd rather keep the cost down than have the visual voice mail and lock into a more expensive 2 yr. contract.

So, do I still need to select "activate" as part of the process? Thanks again!!!

I don't think that you will be able to use your non iphone ATT sim just by activating & jailbreaking. You can try it.If it does not work then you can always unlock.

I did a restore to 1.1.3 and the tried my cingular sim after ziphone -a -j.Did not get any signal.Had to unlock to get it working. This was an old 1.0.2 OTB.It was getting signal and working fine at 1.1.2 when I upgraded with the old oaktoprep method without unlocking.

If you are jailbreaking your phone then whats the harm in unlocking it as well?
First ever Apple product I bought : iPhone.

Oh, sorry for the confusion. I'm not the OP. I just jumped into the thread as my topic is similar.

I definitely plan on unlocking as well so I can use my old AT&T sim. My question was what exactly does the "activation" part of the ZiPhone script do? In my case, a new 16GB 1.1.3 OTB, would I select the checkbox "activate" in ziphone's GUI?
