running 1.0.2 is the only thing I haven't tried because I get an error every time I try to restore using 1.0.2 and iTunes 7.4 (Mac)

i'm having the same problem, h/w unlocked too
the only difference that at home i get 1 to 3 bars and i can make calls,
sometime the calls drop if not connected to power or away from the windows
but when i leave the house, where there are plenty of coverage, i get good 5 bars
so i might have better coverage than where you are at, but definitely there's something wrong, my nokia gets full coverage in the same spot
i monitored the RX levels under cell information in the field test app
at home i get -110 average unplugged, -100 average plugged
outside, -80 average
it appears to be a power management problem like KStar mentioned
good luck for the both of us,
i'm kinda tired from restoring and updating everyday
my solution is to keep the iphone plugged for the time being
cheers

Sorry I was lookup at house because of snow for the last 3 days

Is there no-one who understands this problem? e.g. how a phone can make a call but be 'out of reach' if called?

i read every where about this my phone is a OTB 1.1.2 4.6 BL . after the test point I had the signal keeps drop and get no service, I so I give it a try and opened my phone again (I hate doin that) and then I removed the screw and make sure that the white wire is connected correctly ( I only know that the white wire goes to the antenna ) you may try removing the screw and try the signal before reinserting it that what helped me
again on the left

it is likely the little white wire, or either of it's two connectors. you need to make sure the connectors are properly connecting to the antenna and logic board. you need to make sure there is no metal pieces exposed/touching something else that is metal(for example, the little screw next/under connector on logic board).
spend some time testing the waters(or wires), and you'll likely be pleasantly surprised. i've spent a week thinking it was the baseband, seczone, antenna, etc. what a real pain in the arse it has been.
