[1.1.2 OTB][Question] can activation bypass ever allow iTunes to update my AT&T acct?
The short version: is there a circumstance during jailbreak for which bypass of activation (i.e. "hacktivation") can allow iTunes to send info that would update my pre-existing AT&T account?
I tried an iPhone at launch, legitimately activated; but had a lot of issues so returned it. I was a month-to-month AT&T customer before that; and I was put back on a non-contract monthly plan afterwards.
I decided to try the iPhone again, but this time went the jailbreak & hacktivation route, using my existing SIM card. I ran into internet connectivity trouble during the process (probably the DSL line), and ended up doing it more than once to get a clean upgrade/jailbreak. This is a 1.1.2 OOB phone; and it is now a 1.1.2 jailbroken iPhone. I've not had any problems with using the jailbroken phone, 3rd party apps, etc..
The strange thing is that during one hactivation, I received a popup on the phone telling me it was activated. I didn't think much of it at the time, but today I read online that the popup means the phone was legitimately activated through iTunes. This shouldn't be the case; I didn't go through iTunes to register/activate, select plans, I'm not aware of being charged an activation fee, or any of those things.
So I checked my AT&T account online, and it seems to think I have an iPhone. My phone model is an iPhone (don't remember what it showed before), and I can't modify the data features on my plan because I "am an iPhone user." However, my plan still shows the Media Max 200 bundle, and not the iPhone-specific data plan.
Is it possible that iTunes was able to "partially" activate me with AT&T? I wouldn't think so; but there's my account showing an iPhone. I'm afraid I got saddled with a 2-year contract without realizing it, which is what I want to avoid. I'm hoping my account shows the iPhone as a leftover from last July, when I switched back.
Can anyone give me info on this activation popup and my scenario? Thanks.
Two notes: I had screen problems with the phone and exchanged it for a second one. And at some point I restored settings from backup, rather than set it up as a new phone.
1. Activation pop-up is just the iPhone recognizing the patched lockdownd file.
2. AT&T knows you have an iPhone from the information transmitted from the iPhone to their network.
Every provider knows exactly what phone you have/use soon as you connect.
Specifically the IMEI is a dead giveaway.
I use t-mobile, and have had to call them a few times...
"Are you calling regarding the Nokia, or the iPhone sir?"
