The way you say is promisable, but its not easy. Everything sent is encrypted that its very very hard to find the key to decrypt.
Lets compare it with cracking software. For software, yes, the information sent is also encrypted, so what crackers do is exploit the software, change the inside code to bypass the the validation. For iphone, same, if you want to bypass the validation, you need to do with the iphone, there is no way to sniff on the sent information due to the difficulty to decrypt. Finally its done on the iphone and dev team is doing it.
Of coz there is a way that you sniff and send fake information, but its only when the encrypt algorithm from apple is not strong enough, which I think very hard.

I think the decryption is not the problem as the ROM-Dump contains the public key - the real problem is to encrypt it what can only be done with the private key.
as far as I understand there is need for new Firmware and new Bootloader Version. Chances are good, that the Orange phones comes with a new Version what can be patched and flashed to the 1.1.2 ROM

Hopefully Apple will release some firmware update soon...but if they are not so stupid, they are reading in this forum and just make firmware updates when it's absolutly necessary...
