I guess it could go in the same place as every other feature on the phone - firmware/baseband/wherever it needs to be. Similar things were done for the PSP, nothing major in that case either, should only take a few bytes really - I guess the firmwares already have standard functions that are used for the option screen. And maybe i'm wrong but the firmware may have some space on it anyway - apple will use more space if they add any features themselves. Of course, anything of the type will need for the next secpack to be available - but then again you will need the next secpack before any otb1.1.2 phone is working anyway (excluding any hardware based solution of course).

This is only partly true.

There is considerable pressure from the European operators on apple to supply an update to include MMS and video recording.
So the sting in the tail will be 1.1.3 mms and video recording..but you can't get it as you want to be unlocked...
Pressure is very high regarding MMS, not so high regarding video recording.
There is also pressure to introduce more useful applications (for example some sort of travel utility with exchange rates, etc.).
Apparently also on the request list: easier to implement 3rd party ringtones (the iTunes solution seems to be too difficult), downloadable Wallpapers, Skins, etc.
Personally, I think that Apple and T-Mobile are pretty DUMB and I try to explain why: the girl friend of my wife got an iPhone from her husband as a gift. Yesterday, she saw my iPhone and the dozends of videos/movies and over a hundred songs and she was very surprised, asking me HOW I DID IT.
I asked her how she activated her iPhone and she said she downloaded iTunes and installed it. She didn't really take a further look at iTunes, she just used it for activation and registration. "Nobody told me..." she told me and I explained the whole stuff with buying songs, videos, uploading and even how to get the latest US TV show episodes with a US iTunes account. The sales person at the T-Mobile shop never mentioned the possibilities and the advertisement around the iPhone on the T-Mobile website AND in the T-Mobile shops is actually more focused on the PHONE iPhone, not the multimedia iTunes Shop tool. This is pretty dumb in my opinion because once you get used to the comfort of iTunes and the content especially the US iTunes Shop, you're SOLD.
I think that T-Mobile/Apple marketing in Europe sucks big time, they need to speed up things a little bit to make "ordinary" people understand how they can profit and benefit from an iPhone - iTunes Shop combo.
thats always going to be the case i suppose as long as we have to rely on the "next secpack". Then again, apple have been quite regular with updates so far. Who knows - maybe they don't care too much if the current batch of phones do get unlocked, the unlocked ones are likely to always be a step behind in terms of updates and right now apple surely want to just sell units. With the SDK coming out they need to be able to tell 3rd party devs that there are X amount of potential customers for the software they make. Either way I guess it's all just speculation right now

In the UK it appears the iPhone has not sold anywhere near the amount it should have or was expected to have, I think most people in this day and age are not used to having locked phones.
Hopefully sales do struggle and Apple think again about their strategy of locked phones. I expect more peope worldwide have unlocked iPhones then locked ones!!
They have not found anything... these guys are lyiers. I contacted their support:

Just to let you guys know, do not hesitate to contact people that just want to take credit on such operations.
i'm rather new to iphone hacking thing and i'd like to ask couple of questions. I'm about to buy a OTB 1.1.2 phone and join the Waiters of the 1.1.3:]... Since i'm located in europe there's no way for me of getting at&t sim. As i understand phone comes with wifi enabled without a need of activating it, right? and i guess wifi is the only thing required to hack the phone, am i right? So as i understand it's rather safe to buy US phone and then expect to hack it when new software release is available (if one is possible to hack at all).
Thanks in advance for the helping the noob :]
I have found an article that gives some promise for not too distant firmware updates that MAY have to do with BASEBAND firmware! Let's hope. I know Navizion works with current basebands, but perhaps a new one will help Google Maps be more acurate...
this is all pretty schweeeet...
Thanks to the dev team, I wish I was a better coder, so that I could participate and help.
But ARM/ASM aren't my forte
Although news from macrumors can be true or false, this news brings me more light. :-)
I see the history of iphone updates, it seems that each update comes with a new version of bandbase firmware. So can the next be an exception? Hopefully it will not.
