[1.1.2 OTB] BL 4.6 HW unlock SUCCESSFUL. My experience, tips, and caveats
Ok after more than 24 hours of work i finally have a real phone. Since it was quite a painful experience, i'm gonna just mention some issues i have not come across in the forums taat might help you reach a happy ending.
First act: the iphone has to be opened with a lot of force
Don't use ANY metal object to pry the covers. It WILL cause dents and that is not cool. I used a small plastic stick that my wife uses for her fingernails. That helped me with the antenna plastic cover (the black bottom part). The best place to learn how to do it is www.ifixit.com. Look for the guides section. After I removed the antenna cover I used a small screwdriver to pry the metal cover from the inside, so no problem with the metal. Once i was able to create a mini gap i introduced a credit card and slided it along the metal border on both sides (again ifixit.com) When the phone was opened y used the plastic stick again (no metal now) to remove the metal shield that sits on top of the board. Go easy and pry a little on every side. It's held by some small metal hooks. Just push those up gently. When the board was exposed I really could not believe how small this is. No way i could do it without a magnifying glass. To expose the trace i used the tip of a small swiss army pocket knife. Do it gently and stop as soon as you see the metal. You don't need to expose a lot of trace, just enough to fit the tip of a needle. After that i joined to needles with some wire and started the software part.
If I were you i would't bother issuing commands from your computer via SSH. As soon as you hit ienew, your wifi is gone so you WILL have to continue with your vt100 terminal in the iphone. DO NOT forget to install that beforehand cause you WILL need it, take my word. After ienew does its thing you may want to practice a little to see how much time you need to turn the phone upside down, get the magnifying glass in place, grab your needles and bridge A17 with the capacitor. I would say 60 seconds is more than enough so type sleep 60; iunew and hit enter. Have a watch in front of you so you know the exact moment iunew is executing cause at that precise moment you MUST be holding those needles in place. If everything goes well, you'll see TESTPOINT ok, hit any key and then enter, if not, you need to start over. After you hit enter if testpoint ok, you'll see downloading nor and then a bunch of files being downloaded and finally, you'll read: run bbupdater -v (no need to do that) it won't work. Just place your phone in DFU mode by holding the home and off switch for 30 seconds and when itunes tells you your phone is in recvery mode, then UPDATE (not restore) to 1.1.2 previously downloaded to your computer. After that you'll have to follow the tutorial which takes you to jailbreak.jar and after that it's time to install anysym1.2.1 found in installer in you iphone.
Well that's it. It worked for me
One last thing i never came across in any tutorial. When you finally put your phone back together, the metal cover will have spread wide just a little so when you place it and push it back into place you'll find it's a tiny bit wider that the frame so it sticks out. Just remove it again and work it back to it's previous state with your hands and a little force. You should be fine. Have fun and good luck!

So once you do the H/W unlock how long is it unlocked for? If you restore u gotta JB it again obviously but does the baseband stay unlocked no matter what??

yeah with the H/W method you downgrade the bootloader so it will be like a 1.1.1 OTB iPhone and can be unlocked with anySIM etc.
