SOLVED: [1.1.2] iTunes reports error when trying to upgrade / downgrade (Error 6)
Hey guys,
First post here... thanks to all the efforts of people here I have unlocked several 1.1.1 and 1.1.2 phones.
However, in a new twist, I have received a new week 51 phone with 1.1.2 firmware on it and it just refuses to be upgraded / downgraded.
It has not been unlocked / jailbroken / actiavted as of yet. The idea was to upgrade it to 1.1.3 before I could use ZiPhone to activate, jailbreak and unlock it.
Everytime I boot it in Recovery / DFU mode, iTunes recognises it and when I hit the Shift + Restore / just Restore button, it goes upto unpacking and then stops with a message reading "Cannot continue. Unknown Error (6)"
When I do it in DFU mode I get a similar message "Cannot continue. Unknown Error (-7)"
Since it did not upgrade / downgrade successfully, I decided to give ZiPhone a shot and just use it as an Unlocked and Activated 1.1.2 phone, but that didn't work. It says it'll take 2.30 minutes and just doesn't do anything after that.
I am at my wit's end trying to get this to work. When I use iBrikr and kick it out of Recovery Mode, I am able to go through all the steps listed to jailbreak the phone after downgrading it... meaning I can use the *#307# then 0 etc... right upto the point of AppSnap which obviously doesn't install as this is 1.1.2 while AppSnap was designed for 1.1.1
Any help would be greatly appreciated
I am using the latest version of iTune (7.6) Infact I upgraded to 7.6 after having the same error in 7.5

just for grims..
can you try this on another PC
i ran into this error 6 also, i was on 111, did the okto prep then used itunes to update to 112 and got the error #6
i tried using itunes 7.6 and 7.5 but same thing.
now when i went to another PC that had 7.4 itunes it worked flawlessly.
so
go to another PC, try to use itunes 7.4 or 7.5 to see if that helps then try again.
there is something about temp files that causes itunes to crash on error #6, thets the best guess i could come up with,.

Thanks a lot buddy... Just installed iTunes on my laptop and it FINALLY WORKED and that too with the old 7.5. Didn't have to upgrade to iTunes 7.6 at all.
Must be the temp file issue on my desktop. Can't figure it out though. I thought it could prolly have something to do with an underpowered USB port. My desktop is kind of starved for power atm because of very small smps.
Again... Thank you so much.

yeah i've come across this many times now.
there is something that itunes creates in background when restoring its firmware.
so what i do is use virtual PC or VMware, this way you can open up a new windows thats never had itunes on it and repeat.
otherwise u gota go to another PC to do this.
i even tried uninstalling, reinstalling and same problem, its odd.
i've unlocked about 12 iphones so far so from my experience, always try a reboot first, that may fix it, if not try it on another machine, that will mroe than likely correct the problem.
