Default [1.1.2-1.1.4] Restore always a better option; Beginner Help Please

I know this is an excellent forum, but as a beginner and many like me would like some advice on what to do before using eg.Liberty+ or another programme.
You all tell us what to do when you install Liberty+, but it would help if you could inform us what to do from switching on the i-phone. eg. whether to restore or whatever we should do before setting out to unlock the phone or even upgrade from say 1.1.2 to 1.1.4
I'm sure this has been dealt with before, my apologies but it would really help start everyone off.

    Thanks Jk.

Restore is always a better option.

PM me if you need anything else because that's the only question I got from what you wrote..

think of it this way, restoring your iphone is like formatting your hard drive. Everything will be clean and back to manufacturer setting
