1.1.1 updated in iTunes now bricked
a colleague of mine has accidentally 'bricked' his 1.1.1 iphone by upgrading it to 1.1.2 through iTunes...
the thing is - he has been trying various ways himself to try get it working again but now he's flumoxed... i have no idea what he has done or what he has tried...
my question is - is there something i should do to get it to a particular state 'before' i try and re-unlock it for him? ie will a standard 'restore to 1.1.2' wipe out anything he has done? or will i have to virginize?
any help would be appreciated...

You need to determined if the iPhone was FW 1.1.1 out-of-the-box, if he upgraded it from FW 1.0.2.

hmmm, not sure...
it is a week 38 (from serial number 7U738....)
does that tell what it would have been OTB?

Yes, I think that you can tell from the week production number which FW was originally installed. (Need search on this forum regarding that.)
Unofficial: 4th and 5th digit is 37 or lower you are 1.0.2. 38, you have a 50/50 chance 1.0.2/1.1.1.
39 and above is 1.1.1 .
Here's a reference (based on what I think the iPhone is at): http://www.hackint0sh.org/forum/showthread.php?t=18509

I good clue about the firmware he was running is by asking him if he used to have the iTunes store icon on the springboard.
If that icon was there when the iPhone was still functioning, it must have been 1.1.1, otherwise it was 1.0.2.
Simple!
