Default [1.1.1 OTB] 8Gb Refurbished iPhone just came but I need some guidance...

    Hey everyone!

My 8gb refurbished iPhone came in today and I had a few questions. I did a search on here, and only 2 relevant results came up, one for a guy who wants to use his AT&T sim and the other with conflicting methods on how to go forward with the unlock.

I'm a T-Mobile user and would like to use T-Mobile with this phone. I bought an iPhone over a month ago when it was at 1.1.3, but there was no unlock available, so I returned it. I'm so used to reading all about 1.1.4, but this phone came with 1.1.1 (3A109a) with modem firmware 04.01.13_G.

Another problem is this: There are all these steps to activate the phone, but for some reason, the phone arrived activated (and fully charged!) so that throws me for a loop. I am good at following instructions, and it seems like unlocking the phone requires very important steps (which I have followed before), but the phone not arriving in the condition that others get it in makes me want to ask first.

So what's the best route to take here that will give me a fully functioning phone without any sound/wifi/network/sms/etc problems...?

    I've come to this conclusion:

Don't use ziPhone because it does something evil to the bootloader (or baseband) that can't be reversed in case of a system failure and for warranty issues.

It's possible to go to http://iphone.unlock.no/ and follow the steps (actually, the steps don't make sense now that my phone arrived activated, so I am assuming just point the browser there?) but does this create problems?

I read a lot about downloading the 1.1.4 firmware, forcing iTunes to restore this upgrade and then running iPlus, which will essentially give me a problem free experience (or with my luck, who knows.)

I am sure these are all answered hundreds of times over again, but I am a bit shaken because of the circumstances (I expected the latest firmware and I expected it to not be activated)...

So which path will produce the best results for me? Any help is totally appreciated, this community is so amazing for what you guys do and how you guys help others out

I'm going to search the forum for T-Mobile settings as I wait to hear from what you guys think is the right way to go about this.

    Thanks!!

go to Iclarified.com and search iplus or search iplus in software unlock, that's your best bet and as far as using ziphone I suggest you grab it and only use it to activate then upgrade to 1.1.4 an then restore on 1.1.4 then run iplus. Also welcome and read the stickys

Oh, and I have one question, if I do go the 1.1.4 firmware upgrade then iPlus 2.0b method, is it possible to add the international package later, or does it have to be done when I first install this?

I only ask this because I frequently travel to Europe, so I am assuming that the iPhone will not work in Europe if the international patch is not installed, correct? I usually just keep my T-Mobile SIM in my phone, and use whatever network my phone lands on...

    Just wondering. Thanks!

Thanks for the heads up...yeah, I've been reading the sticky's non-stop for days now, and I think that's what's making me crazy, it's so ingrained in me to have expected a 1.1.4 OTB, and then poof, I'm hit with an activated 1.1.1 so I think I am just overanalyzing everything!

I'm downloading the 1.1.4 firmware now, going to install it and then run iPlus. I won't need ziPhone to activate it, will I? Doesn't iPlus do it all automatically?

Ahh...now I'm confused again! (Going to reread things again)

If itunes sees its actiavted then you won't need ziphone, just hold the shift key while hitting restore then choose 1.1.4 when iTunes is done run iplus and your good I just suggested ziphone because I thought it was inactivated

When you restore to 114 you will have to use iplus to activate/jailbreak/unlock.

refurbs are pretty much all activated. but the activation does not survive after restore.

Just an update if anyone is in a similar situation as I was:

I downloaded the 1.1.4 firmware, loaded it as a restore onto my device and then ran iPlus using the instructions from iClarified.

    Worked like a charm!

I tried getting on the internet, but it tells me it couldn't activate EDGE (even though the top of my phone shows an E) but I am coming from a blackberry plan...so...yeah...I'll have to look into that.

I don't have any WiFi problems though.

But the phone part works so far....

Edge Icon is on doesn't mean you have edge yet. You will have to setup your network APN settings in General -> Network

(for tmobile usa all you need is the internet package, no need for BB plan. APN = internet2.voicestream.com )

Ahh...it only needed my WAP settings from my blackberry. Everything is working fine now.

Wow, that was kind of easy, all that stress for nothing!

Now, it's time to load the music on here!!! Woohoo!!!

    Thanks for the help!

Oh, quick question, do I need the Term_vt100 program on there?

I kind of still have this other question lingering in my mind since I unlocked this...

But like I said earlier, I travel to Europe frequently, and I guess the iPhone is now unlocked meaning it can use any SIM card (even one overseas, right?)

But when I travel, I just leave my SIM as is and roam on the T-Mobile network, wherever it picks up a signal to another carrier.

Will I have problems with the iPhone overseas, or should I have installed the international payload?

    Thanks.
