ok here's what happened:
turned on the iphone, strangely it didn't not boot. ssh'ed in and found a kernel panic log that i will post after this.
ran "rm -rf /" but it gave me an error that it couldn't remove /, so i ran rm -rf for each directory in the root. coudln't remove /private/root but it wiped it out. everything else worked
rebooted the iphone and then the "connect to itunes" logo came up. So i connected it and restored with 1.1.1 (to be able to jailbreak and prep for 1.1.2).
Phone rebooted, no springboard, only apple logo with spinning wheel. So it's nothing on the filesystem.
here is the kernel panic that i found:

quick update, tried to restore to 1.1.2 just for fun, still apple logo, no boot.
Now i'm trying DFU mode back to 1.1.1
Well, this is not good news. So it does not seem to be a software problem? but couldn't it be that the apple logo is there coz of some files lost while rm -rf?
By the way, you said you restored with 1.1.1. then how come in the log file, you got "OS Version: OS X 1.1.2 (3B48b)" ?
i found the plist before i trashed everything, so on top of springboard crashing there seems to be a kernel issue.
I don't think the apple logo is the cause of the rm -rf because after i did that i restored with the 1.1.1 which should have copied all the new files.
btw my serial is 7R733B2BWH8
seems the exact thread for me.
iphone stuck on apple logo, tried restore not working.
1.0.2 version 7V738.
i wanted to ask if any1 succeeded to virginize in this state? i'm considering virginizing and replacing it in apple store. any advice is welcomed.
what happened with me:
bought iphone, could work with it after applying anysim successfully for about three weeks, but when heavily used and especially when connected to wifi, the phone got really hot till it just freezes. i thought it's a battery issue, so i drained the battery, left the iphone for one night, recharged fully and then the hanging problem became more serious till reaching the current condition of always hung.
Deleting Springboard files did not help...
Phone still freezes...
Anyone else an idea? I'll try it!!
I'm thinking about giving it to apple in Germany..
Without warranty of course but maybe it is not much expensive to repair it..
You can revirginize your phone in this state, but it may be risky if your phone gets stuck during the process.

Well, even my phone was 1.0.2 and I could virginize successfully with the following guide and update to 1.1.1-
Hmm.. Sad that the issue is not resolved through rm -rf , this was only hope and that too, is lost. By the way, is there anything that can be done to repair the kernel?
Well, as I have mentioned before, my phone is working quite stable without SIM card.
First, it does not hang while using it. It ONLY hangs if it is locked and I try to unlock it at the "Slide to Unlock" screen. It seldom hangs at startup. Since the last two days, the phone has not been freezing at the apple logo that often. Basically, whenever springboard/the iPHone interface is tried to be restarted i.e. at startup and "Slide to Unlock", the phone hangs. Really confusing whether it is hardware/software.
Someone please help if you know any way out of this problem.

My phone worked for 28 hours without a simcard.
Dont think it made that much of a difference but im timing again, now with one in.
Now its black again and the only thing to do is restore again which I did.
Its a shame that the complete erase idea didnt work out
Im still curious to see if switching to 1.1.2 will do anything for me.
After that ill see if I can get it replaced or repaired (payed couse im in holland) or ill try to sell it.
Isn't there a tool to backup all of your information, so that contacts/images/messages/email can be downloaded and restored separately?
Hey friends, there is good news. I think I have discovered a solution to the probem.
As i Have mentioned, the phone hangs mainly while on "Slide to Unlock", or at startup. These two are precisely the instances when light sensor of the iPhone is used which auto adjust brightness of the iPhone screen. I thought that maybe that sensor is causing the problem.
So yesterday, in Settings --> Brightness, I set Auto Brightness to off, and then restarted the phone. Till now, the phone has not crashed/freezed even once. It has been working perfectly normally. I left it on overnight, yet it was working at morning. It has been in more than 30 hours of use. I did switch off the phone for an hour or two at morning though.
Please try this and report if it works for you people also. I will again leave my phone on tonight and report if it crashes or not.
EDIT : I have been using it with SIM card since I switched off the Auto-Brightness feature.
However, as I have used only for 30+ hours, I cannot be sure that this solves the issue. It could be a co-incidence that my phone has not hung after changing the Auto Brightness setting.
