Question Iphone 3gs ludite respectfully asks for help

I recently bought a jailbreaked 3gs with no sim and I am totally unused to apple iphone. Foolishly, I thought it best to restore the device to factory settings to clear all the old data. After doing this, I could not activate the iphone past the sim card stage. So then I used itunes to update the phone to the latest version, thinking it might work. NO Way! so then I used this link here How to Activate iPhone 3GS & 4 without Sim Card iOS5.1! | iHelpCorner with redsn0w to jailbreak. It all went OK, but at the end I had an 'unrecognised footprint' error after the process. (tried lots of times)

I'm finding lots f possible scammers advertising paid for solutions, although I'm happy to do this myself, I really don't know which way to turn.

The only details I have are the phone IMEI / Serial Number (I know it's week 39 2009) and Model 3gs. Access to both PC and a MAC with itunes. I'm looking to use an o2 sim (UK) that I already have.

Is there a sure fire way to recover this iphone please?

    Really appreciate your support!

    Default

Finally realised that I needed to install TinyUmbrella to find out which version I had on the iphone. The real issue with all this stuff is there are too many resources on the internet to sift though and too many conflicting options...

I had version 6.0 so decided to try the correct version of Redsn0w for V6.0 This at last worked and brought the phone back to usable state.

So for anyone else that gets stuck like this, you DO NEED to know which version you are trying to hacktivate and that's probably why I was getting 'unrecognised footprint error' at the end of my previous attempts. My mistake was I allowed ITunes to do its stuff and upgrade my firmware without taking notice of what was happening

If you don't know and cant get to the settings to find out your version, use TinyUmbrella, at least that worked fore me.

I do have a further problem ...If anyone has some advice... My O2 sim card is not recognised and yes, I figured out that I needed to install cydia>iparalehos>ultrasn0w>ultrasn0w fixer. Still no go. Phone still Boots with searching and then returns to 'no service' airplane on-off-on etc ...

    I have BB: 06.15.00-6.4_M3S2
    Any help appreciated

    Thanks.
