5.0.1 on T-mobile USA, now trying to get everything working... HELP

Ok, so I took the plunge and jumped in to the iOS 5.01 untethered jailbreak, retained 01.59.00 baseband, and got mobile substrate and ultrasn0w installed, so I have signal and service, but I'm pretty much stock at this point.

1. There is NO data configuration page for APN, MMS settings, (cellular network data tab), however EDGE does seem to work?

2. FaceTime still says waiting for activation, even though I have setup a new Apple account with new email and my phone number, no facetime connections have been possible, keeps saying receiver must upgrade past 4.1+ to accept facetime.. and the receiver is also on 5.01 ??

3. iMessage not working, all message recipients say "SMS" not "iMessage"

4. Cydia seems to hang on refresh, I'm assuming a core repo is down because of all the traffic ? but eitherway, most of the basic stuff I want to install says can not install because of lack of dependencies...

I know I'm jumping the gun a little, but do I just have to wait or have these issues been resolved during the tethered release of 5.0 and 5.01 ? Searching seems to bring up all the 4.xx stuff, and not specific for the 5.0x iOS

1) Correct -- you'll need something like TetherMe APN Editing / etc. that add packages to allow APN editing on iOS 4.0+. You probably already had something like this on 4.0 which is why you didn't think about it.
2) Did you hacktivate with redsn0w or did you use SAM to activate after you jailbroke? Proper procedure for a T-Mo phone would be to jailbreak and tell redsn0w to deactivate, then use SAM to generate legit auth/activation tokens.
3) This is related to hacktivation/activation -- if you're not properly activated, I don't believe this will work yet.
4) Yep, bigboss's repo is tanked. It's been down since yesterday morning. Keep refreshing whenever you have a chance to check, you'll likely get through one of these hours.

Last but not least, general reminder, iOS 5.0.1 unlock requires you to use the CommCenter patch from 5.0.0. You probably already know that (since you say you've got service) but since you didn't mention it in your post I figured I'd go ahead and post it. Without that, you'll just get no service.

Beyond that, 5.0.1 seems like a pretty stable jailbreak so far. Most packages work for me, I've got a 3GS running on T-Mo successfully with iMessage (though no Facetime, obviously) and my 4 running 5.0.1 successfully, and I haven't bootlooped anything yet. Only main packages that I know of that aren't working are iFile (crashes to springboard on start for me), OpenNotifier (though they say they've updated it, selecting an icon in the settings.app for it crashes to springboard), and Safari Download Manager (causes Safari to crash to springboard on every launch). Last but not least, iBooks is currently impacted and does not work (fix incoming soon), and the initial redsn0w jailbreak / corona v 1.0-1/1.0-2 have an issue with launchctl that causes SSH not to work. If you jailbroke with redsn0w, go ahead and install the "Corona 5.0.1 Untether" package from Cydia, v1.0-3, it fixes the launchctl issue. If you jailbroke with the untether, then just open Cydia and let it update. Once that's done, it's a pretty stable jailbreak and unlock.

I'm editing these because I'm jumping the gun......... I think stuff is working - not 100% sure, need more time to confirm/deny before passing bad/wrong information..... THANKS.

If you're still waiting for activation, try the following:

1) Add the repo "http://repo.bingner.com" to Cydia
2) Install SAM (Subscriber Artificial Module) from Cydia
3) Run it, choose 'Revert lockdownd to stock' under Settings -> SAM (THIS WILL DEACTIVATE THE PHONE, don't reboot until you've re-activated or you'll need to hacktivate again!)
3a) If you have problems reverting lockdownd to stock (some people do, not sure why) instead, run redsn0w again and choose 'deactivate'.
4) Attempt to activate with iTunes directly.
5) If iTunes activation fails directly, open SAM and configure your SIM Card (by default, it is set to 'Auto', but sometimes this may not work and you may need to manually select T-Mobile as the carrier), then attempt to activate again.

This should fix any activation issues (definitely should fix the 'waiting for activation' you're getting), get iMessage and FaceTime working, and will also mitigate battery drain caused by invalid push certs.

With the exception of settings->phone saying my number is unknown, everything seems to be working. I'd love to say I did this, or that, but honestly, it all just kinda worked it self out... I was just impatient I guess...?


Facetime activate, iMessage activated.... I've facetime'd using phone number and email address, both work.

What's even stranger is, my number IS in settings->facetime ... but not in settings->phone ????????

But hey, it works... its only been what? a couple of days... afaik battery seems fine, push is working... edge is slower than ever! :fail but thats t-mobile's fault......

So far, seems the same as it was on 4.01, just with all the new goodies... THANKS!!

MMS worked for a day or two with a leimobile fix, which replaced the override plist - that has since stopped working. I can send but not receive mms. (except for those using imessage) sending mms to non-imessage contacts is screwy. The mms section is populated with the epc settings.... I can send, but not receive.

I have installed a patched commcenterclassic for ios.501, I've tried a t-mobile usa .ipcc for 4.3 (no change/doesnt work) and also a ipcc for 4.2.1 again no work. I've reset network settings, re-populated fields in network, and same results, I can send, but not receive...............................

VERY FRUSTRATING. Any help would be appreciated.

Checking around and it looks like you've hit all the bases -- you've got the patched CommCenter and you installed the t-mobile USA .IPCC. That said, some people are saying that they only get MMS when they install the legacy 4.3 t-mobile .IPCC and reset their network settings. Which T-Mobile .IPCC were you using?

When you tried the other .IPCC files, did you remove the previous network profiles before replacing? If not, this could end up with you having more than one carrier profile for T-Mobile on your phone that could be conflicting. If you haven't already, remove all .IPCC settings from the phone, then reset network settings, then apply the 4.3.3 IPCC, then reset network settings again. That *should* clear any straggler information out of your network profile and clear you back to one that works for you. Apologies if you've tried this already and it didn't work -- I hate to say I'm pretty much out of suggestions here :(
