Phone number always "UNKNOWN" on iPhone 4 with iOS 5.01 ?
Just curious why this happens... My iphone 4 with ios 5.01 under settings->phone and in the number section its always unknown.
If I eject and reinsert the sim, it comes back... then eventually goes to unknown again after an undefined length of time...
Now, when I set up my phone, everything got activated (facetime, imessage, etc) and it all still works, even with the phone number being unknown - but I'm curious is it only mine that does this or is this a normal function of unlocked/jailbroken i4 ios5.01
I'm on BB 01.59.00, ultrasn0w unlocked, using t-mobile usa.

I JB'd my friend's 4 and the number populated in there, and we used SAM/SAMPrefs for the activation/push certs. I reached out to him after reading your post and he says his number shows in the settings as it should. I recall reading your post about how you jb'd and unlocked this device (so long as it's the same device) and we followed nearly identical steps, so it could be something silly related to SAMPrefs -- when we set it up, we manually configure the country, carrier, and SIM prefix. Did you do the same or did you let it remain on Automatic?
The preceding forum post has been brought to you by the letter "N" and the number 42.

This particular device I'm talking about, which is my personal iphone 4 btw, I used a official sim to activate, then unlocked with ultrasn0w and installed my t-mobile sim. Push works, etc... and as I mentioned everything works - including facetime and imessage based on phone number... but the phone sections show my number as unknown. And to be clear, on this device I did not use samprefs.

Toaster said "If I eject and reinsert the sim, it comes back... then eventually goes to unknown...", if it meant the phone number is shown right after the sim reinserted, the phone does read the number from the sim. The number sbsequently becomes unknown if data from the sim is corrupted.

Yes what I meant there was if I eject and reinstall the sim I will see my phone number show up under PHONE section, then eventually it will show again as UNKNOWN.
Are you saying the sim is corrupt? I can't see that being the case - as everything works...?

The sim records are not corrupted because the phone can read the data right after the sim is inserted but somehow it can't read correctly later. It could be the sim or the sim socket contacts. Almost everything can work without the phone number, the GSM operator switch doesn't read the phone number, it only needs some keys encrypted on the sim to register the phone on the HLR.

Since its a preserved baseband 01.59.00 and unlocked being used on t-mobile usa, that is not an option.
Let me ask this, what are the downside's to phone number not showing up? and being "unknown" ???

If you have shsh saved for 4.0, 4.0.1 or 4.0.2 you can restore to one of these stock ipsw without upgrading BB. MMS may fail if the phone number is unknown. Can you click on UNKNOWN and enter the number?
I've just remembered that from iOS 4 iPhone can read data from sim but can't write to sim. May be the sim number is blank, and when the sim is inserted a number is sent OTA by the operator but not written to the sim. You can put that sim on a Nokia or other brand to verify and write your number to the sim in international format.
