Default iPhone 3gs , old bootrom, ios 5.0.1, No service/searching resolved but haven't JB yet

    Hello all,
this is my first post here, as throughout my other JB's / unlocks, reading has been enough to solve my problems.

    my phone/carrier:
    3gs
    ios 5.0.1
    model xx138xx
    modem firmware 05.11.07
4 and 5 digit of serial number is 29. - old bootrom.

    my carrier is ATT
i bought this phone new from ATT 2 1/2 years ago and always used a cooked IPSW to stay at 05.11.07

i've jailbroken this phone over a few versions of ios and last december updated to 5.0.1.

i think it may be worth a mention that after last JB, i was getting no signal or something that prompted me to unlock phone.
i found some files in the folder that i saved all the tools for this prior task and it had the commcentercenterclassic (sp?) file in it,
so i guess I performed that via WinSCP. it was late in the night so i dont remember.

i've been fine until last week. i have not updated firmware or anything, just the usual and occasional cydia apps that i install.

i got the no service/searching issue, which seems out of no where. didn't drop the phone or anything like that.

i've dont quite a few things over the past days, which include and are not limited only to:

used tools like iREB (ver 4 and 5), Tiny Umbrella, sn0wbreeze, redsn0w,etc
in between restores, tried off/on airplane mode, disable 3g, cellular data, etc.
oddly enough, and call me lucky, i've never removed SIM throughout any of thes processes.

to really simplify this, this is basically what i've done through trial and error...
snowbreeze, restore from a cooked IPSW, kept getting itunes error..
    redsn0w, custom IPSW, itunes error.
redsn0w, NO_BB ipsw, edit the hosts file, it works!!

restored 5.0.1 with redsn0w NO_BB ipsw via itunes and did a back up, no dice.. still searching.
restored 5.0.1 with redsn0w NO_BB ipsw via itunes as a NEW phone, still searching
downgraded to 4.3.3 with redsn0w ipsw NO_BB ipsw via itunes as a NEW phone, still searching but heard a few VM notifications. can't check VM though. no text or calls either.

looked around and hated the 4.x version's features.. going back to 5.0.1, just because it worked for months and i dont get why not now.

used the same no_BB ipsw for 5.0.1 as above and restored.. walked away from pc and then returned. i dont remember if it said it couldn't activate before or after i setup as new phone, but i had not seen this message before.

as i walked through prompts on phone to set it up, it also prompted me for the first time to activate phone. this was new from the other 3-4 times i did a restore.

i turned of 3g data, toggled airplane, rebooted a few times and let it sit. finally got a signal. wow, was i happy.
it was low, then jumped up, then did searching as i turned on 3g and cellular data. it would go from 4-5 bars to searching for signal when i toggled cell data. the reception was all over the place, up and down.

finally i just let it sit with 3g and cellular data on and i was up to 4 bars and fine.
now i'm at work, playing with my phone of course, and i have the normal signal level here of 2 bars, which is actually good.

so here is my QUESTION,.. finally...!!! can i JB and be ok? or is that going to cause the searching issue? (and also force me to unlock to use ATT?) <-- yeah i know that sounds crazy, but that's what its done in the past.

i vaguely remember that last time i think the JB prompted me to have to unlock to use the phone, even though i'm on ATT. i thought that was odd and that's why i remember it.

i'd like to get my cydia apps back but i really need the phone for personal and business reasons. i'm not willing to risk it until Friday i guess, where i have 3 day weekend to resolve it again.

if you know for sure, either from direct experience or feedback from others, please advise.
i know there are some really knowledgable iphone tweakers on this forum, so I figured i'd ask, rather than throw myself under the bus and into the no service/search loop again.

thanks for your reply and time.
let me know if i left any info out...
    nico

    Default no replies?

i guess no one wants to offer up advice.

the only way it to just try it.

any ideas why it prompted to activate the SIM the last time i restored, which is the time it worked?
I'm a little hesitant unless there is a trick to make it act in this manner again.

and should i do all this (restore, jailbreak) without the SIM in the phone?

    thanks.

if I do it I'll report back in case anyone needs to know in the future.

Default jailbreak went ok. signal seems fine

I wanted to update in case this helps anyone else.

i just got home and no later than 5 minutes later I had to jailbreak it.. since i had time over the weekend to recover from it.

all went well. in the past 10 minutes signal is not affected. it's as strong as before and wifi is ok also.

like I said, I'm on ATT and dont need unlock, but last time I did this, I had to unlock after jailbreak and do the commcenterclassic workaround as well.

i'm stoked! adding sources and downloading my purchases now!
