Wifi issues after 4.0 upgrade jailbreak
Phone: 3GS
iOS: 4.0 jailbroken with Pwnage 4.01
Baseband 05.12.01
Old Bootrom
Ultrasn0W 0.93 unlock
Carrier: T-mobile USA
Home Wifi- works fine, WPA Personal security
School Wifi- works fine, WPA Enterprise security
Work Wifi- problem, WPA Enterprise security (proxy required)
Work Wifi #2- problem, WEP security (proxy required)
Work guest Wifi- problem, unsecured
Just updated to 4.0 using Pwnage a couple of days ago. Wifi at home and school function normally. Work secured and work guest- neither will function properly. All worked fine on 3.1.2.
When I try to connect, it looks like it is connected under Settings>Wi-Fi to the network, I even have a valid IP address, subnet Mask, Router, DNS, and Search Domains. I have even ping'ed the IP address and it comes back fine, so I believe I am connected. BUT, the wifi icon does not display on the springboard and the phone wont connect to the internet, mail, etc.
Rarely, I can get it to connect intermittently- I think it has something to do with me taking out the proxy server. If I take out the proxy, and I can manage to connect (10% of the time) I can add the proxy server back in and browse fine until it kicks me off (usually when I go somewhere with Edge or if the phone goes to sleep).
Coworkers with stock 4.0 on iphone 4 can connect to network without problems. I could connect without problems on 3.1.2. My 2G connects fine with 3.1.3.
I have reset settings many many many times. I have reinstalled custom firmware 2 times, built a new custom firmware and reinstalled- to no avail.
Thoughts? I need help because I only get Wi-Fi signal at work and my phone is useless (for work) otherwise.

If it still doesn't work after a _restore_ to stock iOS4, try opening a support ticket with your work's IT. Could very well be an issue on their end.

Already tried help desk- they told me to put it out on some forums... Stock 4.0 firmware works fine.
The only other thing I can think is that it is related to the cisco routers at work somehow?

Try immediately after restoring to CFW, before installing anything from cydia or restoring from backup (don't install ultrasn0w).
See if ultrasn0w affects this.
See if 'reset network settings' changes anything.
You can also try changing WiFi mac address just in case yours gets special treatment from your works' network. It can be set using 'nvram' utility over SSH.

Tried using the Comex jailbreak too, before installing ultrasn0w and WIFI still does not work after JB. It worked for the first time after JB, but then once the phone went to sleep or was disconnected from the wifi, it would work again. Appeared to get IP address but wifi symbol would not show again and cannot connect. So, I am pretty sure it has to do with the jailbreak breaking my wifi for the work connection.
I don't think the mac address is the issue because it worked with that mac when it was on the stock firmware.
Also found out from helpdesk that 2 networks are being broadcast from the same wifi access point (one for school and one for work). One (school) I can connect to without issue, the other I cannot.
Strange and annoying.

wifi issue seems to only happen on unprotected wifi networks. If i loggon at home it will connect find because its WPA2-TKIP but once at school, they have unsecured but then once online you must then go to safari and put in your credentials to get onto the network. It seems to not even want to connect to the network at all. Will keep you posted

same problem
I too have the same problem as the original poster and the latest - I can connect on secure networks such as my home network which requires a password, however, I cannot connect on unsecure networks such as my work's guest access.
I even tried rejailbreaking my device (done on sn0wbreeze 1.7) without any luck.
If anybody has any updates or solutions, I'm all ears.
Thanks.

Having same problem connecting to a CISCO router at work with my jailbroken iPhone 4 (iOS 4.01).
Any help/suggestions appreciated!

For anyone still having this issue, it seems to be related to SBSettings (at least in my case).
Uninstalling SBSettings (along with its plug-ins) fixed all of my wifi issues. I have since reinstalled SBSettings without any plug-ins and things still seem to be working fine, which makes me think some SBSettings plug-in was the culprit.
Cheers
