    Default Upgrading 4.0.2 jailbreak

I no everyone is probably asked about upgrading their jailbreak, I have been doing searches everywhere about jailbreaking and upgrading, I have done searches but the process seems difficult with using tinyumbrella and all this baseband stuff, i was wondering if i upgrade through apple normally and then re-jailbreak isnt that an easier process?

Depends. A lot has changed in the JB scene in a post iOS 4.0 world. SHSH files control whether you can or can't downgrade to 4.x iOS revisions, so blindly updating to the latest version of iOS is VERY BAD, as you can find yourself on a new iOS version with no jailbreak (or only a tethered jailbreak) and absolutely no way to downgrade back.

If you upgrade your phone directly through iTunes, you will end up running iOS 5.0.1 with a non-unlockable baseband, and only a tethered or semi-tethered jailbreak at present. This means you have to plug in the phone to iTunes either every time to boot (tethered), or every time the phone reboots and you want to use jailbreak apps (semi-tethered). It's your call as to whether you ever think you'll want to unlock, but I will remind you that having an unlocked phone adds a lot to the resale value, especially since Apple is getting better and better at protecting their basebands from exploits and unlocks...

Beyond that, you can't go to iOS 5.0.0 anymore -- Apple is not signing it and iOS 5.x is not susceptible to the man-in-the-middle SHSH replay attack, so you can ONLY restore iOS 5 revisions that Apple is currently signing (presently, iOS 5.0.1 is being signed, but iOS 5.0.2 beta has been released and so has iOS 5.1 beta, so it can be expected that they will be released soon). There is no known workaround for this yet.

The *safest* thing to do is to get your SHSH files from Cydia (whichever are available), manually complete an upgrade to 5.0.1, blocking the baseband updates to ensure you still have a soft-unlockable phone, and jailbreak using redsn0w.

PERSONALLY, I'd stay at 4.x until they had an untethered jailbreak for iOS 5. The problem is that the window is so small now considering that if the dev-team finds an exploit that they can use for iOS 5.0.1 and releases it, all Apple has to do is release 5.0.2 and that exploit is completely worthless to anyone who upgrades. They won't be able to downgrade because of the SHSH issue, so it's a very delicate game right now. ESPECIALLY for GSM iPad2 users like myself who can't upgrade to iOS 5 at all because we can't use SHSH to downgrade back to 4.

Anyways, that may have been more info than you wanted, but the long and short is that the iOS 5.0 jailbreak is not yet untethered, and imo because of that is not yet ready for prime time. You CAN upgrade safely and jailbreak, you can also upgrade and block the baseband update to keep your phone unlockable.

that was very informative, but i dont understand the difference between tethered and untethered and unlock and baseband, i cant find any explanations of what these are, what i have done is downloaded ifaith so i can save me shsh which is on 4.0.2 which was jailbroken by limera1n, if i use tinyumbrella after i save my shsh on ifaith, then can i upgrade, the thing is i am worried about all this tethered and untethered baseband as i dont understand what it is?

Tethered means that you have to plug into itunes when the phone reboots or it just sticks at 'connect to itunes'.
Untethered means the phone will reboot normally after a hard boot and jailbreak apps will run
Semi-tethered means the phone will reboot normally, but jailbreak apps and other modified software will not run, and many normal apps will perform with reduced functionality.

Unlock is the process of bypassing the carrier lock on the phone
baseband is a term for the part of the iPhone that manages connectivity to wireless, bluetooth, and cellular networks. It is what gets exploited when the phone is unlocked by ultrasn0w.

If you have a 4.0.2 SHSH, this means you can always downgrade back to 4.0.2, so that is good.

You'll need TinyUmbrella to either block baseband updates or to supply the SHSH to iTunes when it asks, depending on if you're upgrading to 5.x or downgrading to 4.x. You still use iTunes to do the upgrade itself. You can also use redsn0w to create the custom no_BB firmware if you want to do it that way.

It should. iFaith has caused bootloops before so be careful and do a backup, but you should come out of it with 4.0.2 SHSH. The custom NO_BB firmware is a firmware with no baseband, made either to preserve existing basebands or allow users with 06.15 to upgrade their iOS without the phone sticking in recovery mode due to baseband incompatibility.
