Default Upgrading from 4.0.1 to 4.2.1 activation and other questions?

So around october last year I bought an iPhone 4 from a Guy who had bought it from ATT, it has
    iOS 4.0.1, unlocked and jailbroken.

    My question is:

Is upgrading from 4.0.1 worth the hassle? ( in my case).

I bought the phone whilst in the USA, now, i'm no longer in the US, so I don't have access to an ATT sim card.

    My questions are

    1. If I upgrade to 4.2.1 (without upgrading baseband obviously) can I use SAM activation to get around not having an official SIM for activation?
    2. Can I use my countries official iPhone distributor ( Claro ) to activate the iPhone or is it dead locked to being only activated by an ATT sim card.
    3. What other ways for updating iOS could I go for?

edit: 4. Currently push notifications work like a Charm, if I do any of the above, would I lose push notifications?

I don't think it is a hassle but rather than what you need.
if you have an app that requires fw 4.2.1 then you don't have much of a choice

Not 100% certain but i think SAM should work. Read more here: http://www.bingner.com/SAM.html

you cannot, it's locked to ATT

pwnagetool 4.2 is your safest bet and it does activation as well

You will loose push if the cert in the device is not unique.
I believe SAM will help with push as well.

Doesn't SAM require for the iPhone to already be activated? Ie If I upgrade to 4.2.1. and Can't activate, can I still jailbreak without having the device activated?

pwnagetool 4.2 custom firmware creation allows activation to be checked so you can install SAM after the restore

Yes, but it's not reliable, we don't recommend it, and if it breaks your phone all the mods here will blatantly tell you that we can't help you until you restore back to stock and use supported tools. It's a better bet to either set up a hackintosh VM on your machine or visit a friend with a Mac. The sn0wbreeze tools are unreliable, very hacky, and cause a lot of problems. A quick search through the forum will illustrate many sporadic and extremely difficult to troubleshoot issues that are caused by that tool.

But yes, you *could* use it. You may be one of the lucky ones who has no problems with it.
