upgrade to 4.1.2 with bb 5.13.04 possible?

Is it possible to upgrade to 4.1.2 with keeping bb 5.13.04 and then jb/unlock?

If you mean iOS 4.2.1 (why do so many people write it as 4.1.2?) then yes via PwnageTool 4.1.3 - see Dev-Team Blog - Ultra-recycle
specifically the section that starts with:

This PwnageTool also contains a 4.2.1 bundle for iPhone3G owners…

Procedure is the same as described in iClarified - iPhone - How to Jailbreak Your iPhone 3G Using PwnageTool (Mac) [4.1] - just use pwnagetool 4.1.3 and run pwnagetool on iPhone1,2_4.2.1_8C148_Restore.ipsw from http://www.hackint0sh.org/f127/22056.htm to generate a custom IPSW.

Then unlock with ultrasn0w http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=4253

Finally, I recommend you install SAM http://www.hackint0sh.org/f204/194306.htm and ensur ethat the phone is wildcardactivated. You can then uninstall SAM again (if you want) this will make sure you don't have battery problems.

sorry to be a pain: when I download the latest 4.2.1 firmware, it's saved as a zip file. is this normal? it's not like the picture in the iclarified tutorial.

Could you tell more about this SAM? I don't have problems with the battery but I'm interested and have never come across this in any topics.

hello again, after following all the steps I now have a bb 5.15.04 (I made sure not to choose a bb update in redsn0w). Is this why now Ultrasn0w won't work (no carrier signal)?

is there a way to fix this?

This is something you propably would have found out if you would have googled a bit but yes you can't unlock 5.15.04 - period. Or at least for now. You can try to upgrade to iPad baseband but that is something that I won't recommend! At least get to know the risks first!

I just don't understand why the bb changed! Anyway, I'm aware of the risks and I have updated to 6.15.

This is because you DID NOT use pwnagetool. Only pwnagetool custom IPSW can prevent baseband update on a 3G or 3GS. I did recommend pwnagetool.

Redsn0w is NOT the same as pwnagetool. They work differently - don't get them confused.

When you restore original IPSW downloaded directly from Apple, any baseband updates contained in the IPSW will always be applied.
