Default Updating jailbroken 3gs running 3.1.3?

I have a jailbroken iphone 3gs running 3.1.3. Was hoping to get some advice about how to update to newer OS without losing the jailbreak. I'd really like to upgrade bc of the new features, but it seems so complicated to do. Last time I did the jailbreak it was as simple as plug in and go, done within minutes. I'd really appreciate any advice/help. Thanks!

I'm not 100% sure. There is a file in Cydia called ultrasnow, could that be it? I'm sorry, I'm clueless. Thanks for the help.

Ultrasn0w is an unlock, not a jailbreak..

It would be much easier if you could remember what you did.

Lets try another approach, did you ever click "make my life easier" in Cydia? Do you recall approximately when you originally jailbroke/unlocked?

Can you post the first 5 digits of your serial number? You can find this under settings->general->about

That, "make life easier" thing sounds familiar. Feel like I did do that. Original jailbreak was less than a year ago. Phone was 3.1.2 when I bought it, 3.1.3 upgrade released within a few days of when I did the jailbreak. Is it sketchy to list serial number on a blog? Lol. So here's my real question, this process seems like a real bitch for the uninitiated iPhone user, is the update to the new OS even worth it?!

Yes the 4.x upgrade is worth it just for the fast user switching and screen lock option let alone all the other small and big improvements.

It is also worth it to get control of your ability to jailbreak (and if necessary unlock). These can be simple if you take the right precautions. Many are so excited to get jailbroken and unlocked they forget to ask a very good question - how can I do this again if my iPhone crashes?

with 3.1.x there were a lot of people who used blackra1n and blacksn0w.

Blackra1n doesn't include the ability to enable read/write access to your entire iPhone over USB. That is very useful in many iPhone crash/hang scenarios.

Blacksn0w has a bug that can lead to bootloops, no wifi and corrupt baseband.

Blackra1n also allows install of rock.app a cydia alternative that screwed many people's iPhones by incorrectly removing a whole lot of low level files.

So there are many good reasons to run 4.x

As for the serial number post only the 3rd, 4th and 5th digit. The better check is to look at the bootrom version directly.

I didn't know that rock did that. That was what I used until it was taken down last week. Sweet. 3rd 4th 5th is: 002.

The situation is explained by Saurik in a post on Cydia:

The key thing to realize is that Intelliborn, the company that brought you such products as IntelliScreen and MyWi, are the same developers who created Rock Your iPhone.

Unfortunately, due to some early miscommunication, rather than us being in a position where we were cooperating on platforms like Cydia, we ended up spending most of our time competing with each other over the course of the last two years.

This was not good: Rock ended up wasting a ton of effort implementing Cydia, while SaurikIT got dragged into an "apps battle" to compete with the Rock exclusives from Intelliborn.

The primary goal of this new world, then, is to put everyone "back on task", with a true collaboration rather than this incessant competition.

For users who were happy with Rock due to its speediness. Saurik says this was because of some incorrect/dangerous shortcuts which led to the "essential upgrade" that was required for Spirit and then crashed many devices. Now that the apps competition is over, Saurik will be able to concentrate on platform issues full time and hopefully improve performance.

As part of the collaboration, Rock's backup feature is being implemented in Cydia and all previous Rock backups and licenses will be merged into the Cydia database. Comments and ratings also being looked at and Saurik is consulting with the major repos on different implementation ideas.

This announcement should come as welcomed news to jailbreakers who will benefit from being able to get all their apps in one place as well as enjoy the improvements to Cydia.

Spirit jailbroken 3GS can be much more difficult to go to 4.x.

Have you clicked "make my life easier" in Cydia? If you open up Cydia, does it say that you have any SHSH on file at the top of the home screen?

If you have 4.0 or 4.0.1 SHSH on file, use TinyUmbrella's TSS server to restore or upgrade to 4.0 or 4.0.1 - then jailbreak with jailbreakme.com

If you don't have a 4.0 or 4.0.1 SHSH on file, your only 4.x option is if you have an old bootrom 3GS.

You need to check the bootrom version using this Bootrom - The iPhone Wiki or this PwnageTool 3.1.4 for Mac OS X guide

Old bootrom, can in theory be taken to 4.x via pwnagegtool custom IPSW (however you first need to use a program called Spirit2pwn - which we don't really encourage or support)
